DWC hydro question

hey I am going to be doing 5 gallon buckets with DWC and I'm a bit confused as to how much air actually needs to be put through the water and the roots to keep them from being destroyed.
Will a regular aquarium air pump work with say a 4 inch air stone?
any advice would be of great value.
On a side note I'm gonna have to use cheap distilled water because our water is horrible 590ppm outta the faucet but the PH is in an acceptable level. thanks for the help!

thanks just threw a little 2 liter bopttle with airstone, nutes, and a extra basil plug layin around. so a rapid rooter plug would fit and am letting it bubble away at about 500 ppm i will edit and put a pic up later My first hydro of anything!
