How does a DWC bring nutes up to the plant roots?
    #7348848 -

Okay, so, I have a DWC system that I basically put together with only a mere idea of what I was doing. It consists of a tub that has a raise with 4 net pots in it. Peat moss, perlite and vermiculite go into the area where I plant in and it is supposed to "whick" the water up. But my questions is, If I'm pumping air into the resivore and I'm adding liquid nutes to the water, should the soil "wick" the nutes and oxy too? The bottom of the net pots are about 5 cm away from the bottom and are about 5-6 in tall. I was on the idea I could do 4 big plants or 8 smaller plants. Anywho, help a brutha out :gethigh:

the bottom of the net pot should be below the water level so the medium is constantly wet.

And it helps to add oxygen to the water via water pump correct?

no!

When you first start your DWC the bottom of the net pot should be an inch above the top of the water.

At first, the roots will not have access to the nutrients in the container so you'll have to pour them on the base of the plant until the  reach far enough to touch the water.

The reason you shouldn't let the netted pot be at all submerged is because you want the roots to search for those nutes!

Also this will encourage nasties to grow in your netted pot. Whatever you use as a medium is like a sponge, you don't want to give those nasties any kind of environment to grow in!

Eventually those roots will find where they're supposed to be and all will be well.

of course, thats the whole point of DWC...
the roots of the plant can cope with being partly submerged cos of the high oxygen content...

u should read your hightimes mags instead of lookin at the pics

have you read the most recent high times magazine? Ive got an ad in their for an artfital root system.

basicly you take a cutting and then you stick my product up your plants ass then it grows around it.

the benifit is since its not in soil it doesn't need its roots to support it, theirfor you are giving it "big" roots.

ecentially its an iv system on drop. comes with 3 bags that you fill with different nuts. you adjust the drip so you can give yoru plant "exactly" what it needs.

A single air pump should do for a 5 gallon DWC. Check you local pet stores or wally world (Wal-mart).

Without that air pump your plants will die. :crying:

Normally there is enough air between the bits of soil around your plant's roots, but when roots are submerged the air pump is necessary (unless you're doing ebb & flow that is)

EDIT:

Forgot to mention, you shouldn't need to pour water on your plant that long, as the air pump will splash nutes around the bucket, enough so that they will coat the bottom of the net pot.

This guide is great if you want to learn about the basics of a DWC.

Take note the guy who wrote the guide is using a dual output air pump (confused the shit out of me when I first read through it)
