Honey Water & Bird Seed
    #524497 -

Two Questions

AFOAF inoculated honey water jars and got a good mycilium growth. He inoculated some jars of BRF and they look OK. He also inoculated new jars of HW with the mycil from the first jar. Will this work or does the mycil degrade?

Second Question:
I think I seen this somewhere but can't find it.
Can you inoculate bird seed or other substrate with Colonized BRF and then case the birdseed? If this is possible can someone point me in the right direction.

Thanks,

Bob

I have a follow-up question:

Anyone use polyfil or filter disks on their honey-water jars, or do you keep them sealed?

seal dem jars tight. Don't bother with air.

I love honey water. I find it a awsome way to store for quick innoculation.

as long as you have colonized material, you're doing fine.
i love honeywater too....it's much quicker. i even add a bit into my cake's recipe.

I'm a honey water fan too!!!

I'm no expert, but I'll post what I think to be true.

As for you're first question:
I've never really gotten the answer to this one, I've researched and asked, but the answers were confusing. In my experience, the mycellium reaches a "saturation point" where it no longer increases in size. Transferring some of that mycellium into a new jar of honey water, would not change that, I don't think. My instincts tell me that the mycellium would continue to live, but probably not grow.

If anyone knows this to be false, PLEASE CORRECT ME!!!

on the second question:

Although I've never tried this idea out, it seems plausible. Mycellium will colonize bird seed, it seems that the BFR substrate would be similar to using other medias to innoculate the seed. I'm not sure why you'd do it with the host of other medias available, but can't see why it wouldn't work.

Again, if anyone knows the answers to these questions definitively, please post them!!!

Thanks Fantazee.
I was trying the bird seed thing because I don't have room to case anything now and thought this would buy me a couple of weeks.

Thanks
Bob

The mycellium doesn't reach a saturation point... it simply uses up the nutrients in the jar and stops growing. By adding a small amount of the mycellium to a new jar, it will continue to grow and multiply.

SHDWSTR may be right, but I've never had much luck that way, only tried it twice, could have been 1,000 reasons why it didn't work for me.

Also, on the BRF question:
You may have trouble with contams, but, again, I've never tried it so I'm just using logic to answer.

Bob, did you get my PM???
I sent it to you a few days ago...
