Am I Self Centered Or Service To Others?
    #5213499 -

I play guitar and involve myself with musikk as part of my plan to someday be a professional musician. Is undergoing such actions self-centered, or service to others, as I would be supplying musikk to others that they would dig and would benefit from?

You cannot be other than self centered. Unless you are off balance.

The fact that others can benefit from what you do just shows that you are skillfull at being self centered; as in doing what really makes you joyfull; a path with heart.  :hairmetal:

Well, in the world of professional music, you would often find yourself being paid to play for others, so in that regard you would be providing services to others.  These kinds of gigs might not always be the kind of music you love to do, so you may also spend time working on that music that you do love.  And if you can get paid for playing the music that you love, Congratulations

Because you are seperate from others. I believe every act we do we do for ourselves. How that translates to others is more part of how well we honestly love ourselves then how selfless we are. If you truly act in your own best interests it would most always be of benefit to the world. Don't cha think.

each note you play can last forever in someone's dreams
each bun baked can be baked with love.
i.e.
there is not task too menial or too selfish that it can't in some way carry an aspect of giving or caring in it's intention.

I've often had this notion:

When you conciously act selfleslly, (ie helping some1 else) you gain the pleasure of having benefited another person even when it's something you might not have enjoyed.

Thats the case for when you might play music you don't enjoy.

There's however another apsect:
Do you make music for yourself or for other people?

>> I play guitar and involve myself with musikk as part of my plan to someday be a professional musician. Is undergoing such actions self-centered, or service to others, as I would be supplying musikk to others that they would dig and would benefit from?

That depends on your intention. The nature of any action depend on it's intention. Giving music to others is not an inherently positive action. They might experience benefit from receiving your music, and from their point of view that is a kindness, but from your point of view the nature of your action depends entirely on it's intention. If you have other's forefront in your mind when you compose, then it can be said that your action is in service of others. If you have your own fame and fortune forefront in your mind when you compose, then it can be said that your action is essentially selfish. Mostly likely right now is that your intention is mixed.

>> you are seperate from others.

That's not true.

>> I believe every act we do we do for ourselves.

True, but only because we believe we are seperate from others. This view, and the actions that flow from it, are optional.

>> How that translates to others is more part of how well we honestly love ourselves then how selfless we are. If you truly act in your own best interests it would most always be of benefit to the world. Don't cha think

This sounds like you're saying benefitting others is a secondary effect of complete and total selfishness, and that the way to have a positive impact on the world is to always put yourself first, as though this is how we were designed. Am I misinterpreting you? Can you explain this?

Yes serving your self is your first duty to love and life. You are no less important than anyone else, but the fact that you are living inside of yourself makes you responsible for the care of your organism.

People who truly love and care for themselves make choices consistently that benefit the whole world as they seek joy and wholeness which radiates love to others through the self. They consistently reject living in ways that do not fulfill their highest good. Service is part of their joy but they never do it out of duty or because they should be serving others, they do it because it makes them full up with love.

Hum..................You are asking a question pertaining directly to you right ? Well based on your shroomery nature I would say you would only be serving yourself..but we all know this cyber world is not a true measure of who we really are...........

On thoughts regarding music and your question..........I am a guitar player of 26 years and have been some what a professional musician.so I can give some useful words.

I play for the pure joy of it. when I did get paid the cash, self centerd income was in the back of my mind. In fact there was a time I thought for sure I would make a living as a musician so then my goal was self centered. BUT,even when I was playing for cash and my mindset was a career. There were times, many times in fact where the music and the emotional reactions to the crowd WAS EVERYTHING....THE MUSIC IS EVERYTHING, for get the cash. And that my friend is the bottom line with music, at least for me anyway. The engaged focus between myself and the listener was the KEY. And that is as far from self centered as one can get...

This does sound like selflessness. It sounds like the practise of cherishing others. The sort of person who lives this lifestyle conceives of no special significance of self, understanding themself to be just another living being as deserving of happiness and freedom as any other. And, working for the greater good of unbounded happiness, they increase it's abundance through cherishing others. As a secondary benefit, they themselves experience tremendous wisdom and bliss. That's the essence of selflessness.
