HAY SEEDS (tiny ones)

For those of you who thinking of gathering & using H/POO bulk substrate.
Always, be careful when gathering h/poo around stables, barns, manure piles, or whatever.
That there isn't any tiny hay seeds blown, scattered or tracked into the h/poo - you are gathering. As hay bales, piles, fodder, hay bedding is common around where-ever horses are stabled.
These little tiny bastard hay/grass seeds can do your grow in. They contain mold endospores, that pasteurization will not kill.
If a few of these tiny seeds end up in your pasteurized h/poo substrate. They will germinate, grow & mold will crop out about the time primordia develops.

Just keep an eye out for seeds like that. If you are gathering out of a pile, dig a little deeper.
If you gather muffins & nuggets, you are safe. Or, if the area you gather from is free of them, you are safe.
Someone I know (& trust)had their last couple grows for south. They asked me for advice. I went over & eyeballed their set-up. Which was great.
Then, I checked their h/poo stash. Every other handful had a few hay seeds in it.
They got their h/poo stash, from inside a stable. What happened was when the stable was cleaned. All the old fodder, hay & floor sweepings, went out with the h/poo.
No doubt, the seeds were the cause of his contam problems. I just thought to pass it on, why they occurred.

My poo is fucking full of these. It also came from inside a stable, which, as you described, had everything swept out.. but the thing is, these seeds are IN the muffins. I collected nothing but balls off the ground around the pile, and all the seeds I have are from inside the broken up nuggets.
Should I just toss everything out, and find new poo? I can't believe this.. What if I just boost the spawn ratio up?
Man, this sucks.

If the seeds are still viable, then so are the spores inside them. Slit, cut or mash a few open. That should tell you if they are intact, viable, or not. If not, go for it. If so, about the only option you have is to sterilize that h/poo.

If I pinch them even the slightest, they squirt starchy looking goop.. they all came from inside the poo nuggets, so I think I'm good?
I'm going to spawn and hope for the best. I picked out as many as I could as well, and I'm going to use a high 1:3 spawn ratio.
Thanks for posting so much info on poo, btw. Its very much so appreciated.

hey agar...
my folks breed horses (seriously), and i was pondering gathering up my own poo from their pasture/stalls and letting it leach out on my balcony (in the Spring). seems silly to go thru a vendor when there's literally TONS of H Poo at at their house.
if i only collected FRESH patties/nuggets/piles, and allowed it to leach during the spring/early summer, would this beat out these extra problem ingredients?
or would it be just as counter-productive to collect & leach fresh poo piles?

Just gather nuggets & muffins. Spead them out somewhere & let weather do most of the job - for you. Cycles of snow, thaw, rain, wind & SUN, do the trick.

I am pretty sure the mold inside of the seeds is called Ergot and It is used in the making of a nother drug..LSD maybe
Suposedly Ergot poisoning is what caused the dark ages where everyone was thought to be whiches and people where burned on the stake because everyone was all high and they didnt know why

I'm a little worried that my bail of straw might have some of these seeds in them. I've been spawning to a 60/40 straw/pre-pasteurized poo mix, but with little success. I looked in the bail and found a bunch of tails, but most of the seed pods seem to be empty. Think I should find a new source of straw or is there something else i can do?

Sorry but that's not true. If you eat ergot infected grains you die a horrible death. It was a mysteriuos plague that swept Europe and nobody knew what was happening until they linked it to the infected grains. Ergot fungus will not make you trip. It has to have chemicals extracted and a sophisticated lab setup to make LSD.

Guess Ill be sterilising my poo, then. Just got it from a stable yesterday. Funny thing is, the stable that I get it from is where the local mounted police are stationed, lol.

Also, since Im taking care of my grandmother now and cant openly cook SHIT on the stove anymore, would sterilization be possible by pouring boiling water in it in a cooler?

I have seen threads with people saying they have no problems with the hay seeds in the manure. I thought the beneficial bacteria may overcome it, and was talking about something similar here.
Agar- I would like to see your opinions on this http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=Forum2&Number=5171146
