Sound, tone of voice
    #5201878 -

Why is it that when certain people speak, I get really agitated and annoyed?

It doesn't even matter what the person is saying, it's the tone of their voice that pisses me off.

Because you have mental and emotional problems?

Why don't you go post this in The Pub, you know, somewhere where it is actually on-topic?

I wasn't flaming, just giving an honest, quick answer to a quick question that is rather off-topic. If someone is seriously getting upset and angry at the tone of another person's voice, they have mental issues that they need to sort out if they are going to be a part of society. :smirk:

actually i wanted to analyze why this would bother me...

why would a certain sound frequency annoy me?

could it have something to do with the past, and connotations i carry for certain sounds? or could it be some kind of sound archetype already imprinted in my brain?

I know you weren't flaming. The truth hurts. That's why I said OUCH and of course the first answer which was a flame.

But don't fret TameMe, we all have these mental, emotional problems. Fireworks answer was accurate.

i disagree about the topic part...

but the emotional and mental problems i agree...

maybe this should be moved to the mental health forum...

but i'm interested in why this has happened....and after i figure that out..i'd like to learn how to fix it.

the cues trigger associations from memory.
our associative memory helps us defend ourselves from attack such as when we have a bad experience with somebody with a certain kind of voice.

it is very hard to reprogram ourselves for the reality that some offenders later become admirers or more, but we have to try.

often it helps to revisit the specific old associations in order to defuse them gently.

reprograming i think would require me to fake my attitude...which i hate doing. i almost find it morally wrong to do so.

Reprogramming one's reactions in such a situation isn't about faking an attitude... it's about using logical reasoning to deduce that your own reactions are not congruent with how you truly feel you should be presenting yourself.

In other words, it's not faking, but the very opposite thereof. "Reprogramming yourself" involves using awareness to see past a deeply ingrained false aspect of yourself through realization that your reactions (agitation and annoyance with no legitimacy) conflict with the very morality you mentioned above.

You obviously feel that your actions are atleast somewhat irrational, or else you wouldn't have posted this thread questioning it, right?

So use that realization of irrationality in combination with some rational logic to understand that a change of attitude would not be fake, but would more accurately reflect your true intentions as a person, and allow your morality and the reality of how you behave to be a little more inline. (the opposite of being fake.)

Any of that jive?

right - exactly
you have to conjure up the sound or cadence and find out what it is associated to in your memory, this will include the vague and troubling times such as when you have just reacted defensively, but eventually you will discover the key event(s) that made you begin to cringe at the certain sound or cadence.

after reviewing it a few times in context and at its original point in your life, it will become a weaker and weaker automatic defensive reflex.

that is how it is reprogrammed; not by pretending, but by gentle seeing.

It's not just the frequency of the voice that we may find displeasing. Pitch is a more probable factor.

For example, when we hear a brown, velvet voice speaking over a movie preview, it makes the movie sound grand and interests us. When we hear a high pitched shriek walking by a bad neighborhood in the city, on the other hand, it automatically alerts us of nearby danger, gives us a physiological response of our heart speeding up, sobers us up, issues the fight or flight syndrome, etc.

Your tonality can influence a lot of what you say. Try accentuating certain words, and the same sentence said with different pitch, tone and amplitude will grasp much more attention from the audience than if you choose to neglect such factors.

He might have not phrased his question quite that well, but this certainly belongs in the forum, unless of course, psychology discussions arent allowed.

Linguistic physiological response is very real. Ever hear someone come in a room with a monotone voice and you just want to find the first excuse to get out of there so you wont die of boredom? Or how about someone telling you a story with the voice of a stage actor, and you're just hanging on every word they say?

Your communication skills are put in a serious burden if you dont see the connection between linguistics and speech.

ooooh. damn, it's so obvious yet....i wasn't even looking at it like that.

because my emotional response comes first...it seems to me....that if i try to talk myself out of feeling that way...that i am in fact lying to myself.

i do want this reaction to change, so now i guess i will have to realize that my rational mind takes precedence over the emotional mind.

Exactly! There's nothing wrong with having an awareness of how tone, and sound effect you.

Some are kidding themselves about the effects of sound on the nervous system. Our government did extensive research into it looking to develop sound wave weaponry. Sound can KILL, shatter glass and crumble down concrete walls. Sound waves can be highly destructive. In the case of voice to person, it can effect the nervous system like nails down a chalk board.

There's a reason why the U.S. air force isn't allowed to break the sound barrier over populated areas. Ones tone or frequency pitch won't kill you but it can have a negative jarring or screeching effect on your nervous system causing your negative reaction to it.

Everyone is aware of the opera singer being able to shatter glass with their voice. Our bodies are made of material matter also. The more relaxed we stay, the easier we can absorb shattering sounds. If we are rigid and tense, they will work us over harder.

Work with what Red said about it maybe being related to memory and then follow with what JC said. You may be able to find someone in your past who used similar tone frequency, volumes and patterns you had bad experiences with and you can do some healing work with this knowledge and also realize, the newer people in your life speaking similarly are not the ones you carry bad feelings towards.

Some people developed bad habits of speaking in dissonant tones because they learned , they are effective for disabling peoples nerves. It's a form of personal weaponry for some.

It's not what is said but HOW its said related to choice of words and their order and choice of tone and volume.

You can growl in a low slow loud voice for someone to keep the fuck out of your business.

You can screech in a high loud fast voice for someone to stay the fuck out of you business.

Or you can say in a normal pleasant tone, speed and volume, "May I ask you to please respect my privacy in this matter. Thank you."

See and feel the difference?

The first two examples of are how people use their voice as a weapon. I don't think most realize they are doing it either. It's just learned behavior and becomes habit for people.

I think it was a big step for you to realize the powerful effects sound wave frequencies have on the nervous system. Start doing what I did and when people pull out the vocal weapons, ask them to please not use that tone of voice with you. Explain to them calmly, that you will understand them better if they speak to you in a calm voice. If they can't gain control over themselves, leave the room and tell them, you'll finish the discussion when they calm down.

The ones who slipped out of ration and into fear or anger are the ones who start using vocal weaponry. They can induce others into it with it. It's not an excuse to start using it back at them. Use ration to stay calm, help them get calm or leave.

We've all done it at some point and we can all work to understand its effects better, undo it's damage and to break the pattern.

I think 2006 is going to be the year I start paying better attention to how I use my voice, vocal and written. I want to get really good at being soothing, positive, constructive and nurturing with it. I have my work cut out for me, but its a good challenge I aspire to this year.

This topic does fit in with spirituality as a lot of spiritualist work with sound for healing. It's called toning and it's powerful stuff.

:peace:
