jar to terrarium time, please help
    #519571 - 01/13/02 03:22 PM (21 years, 10 months ago)

i bought those big, blue tupperware bins, they are 3' long, 2' wide and 2' high and seem to seal tightly. i gots the good humidity/temp guage, i have pearlite and verm, what order do i place these things in? my friend says put wet perlite in the bottom of the bin, then break up the cakes and put them into steralized into tin foil baking pans, with holes in the bottom of them.........but.........wont that soak the cake and, if i use peroxide in my perlite, wont that get up into the cake and kill it? also, do i put the broken up cakes in the foil pans alone, if not what do i put in there and, lastly, can the wet pearlite keep the terrarium so humid that i dont need to spray it or do anything other then open the lid and fan some air in once a day. sorry for being a pain, thanks for your help!!!! -shromgrowinchick

whoa. too many questions at once. you need to do a search in the search area on casing.

your only real worries are letting a bit of light into your terrarium. most of the rest will tend to take care of itself. my neighbor's cat uses translucent terrarea.

personally I'm not big on foil pans, Stamets says that mushroom mycelium can absorb aluminum and this could be a cause of alsheimers disease, (consumption of too much aluminum)

most people add some inert material along with the cakes to take up space, control humidity, and keep light from hitting the bottom of the cakes. some people use verm, others use a partly nutritive material like straw or sawdust from alderwood. pearlite and peatmoss also work, some people also use stear manure. for beginners use verm, since it is most idiot-proof.

I've never heard that mycelium can absorb aluminum...is this true? I have never had bad experiences using aluminum trays
