To the best of my knowledge there are no poisonous mushrooms that grow exclusively on cow and horse dung. (with the exception of coprinus because of the alcohol related toxicity)

Could anyone else confirm this?

There are poisonous and/or unknown edibility species that can occur in dung. Species from Agrocybe and Conocybe come to mind.. as well as coprinus like you mentioned. I'm sure there are probably others, although I don't feel like digging through my books for it. I have seen several hard to identify tiny little rust brown gilled/spored LBM mushrooms in a local cow/horse field growing straight out of the dung, in my area.
While it may be somewhat easier to separate the poisonous dung inhabiting mushrooms from the non-poisonous, there is still the threat of the ones that are unknown. Even if the chances of finding something potentially poisonous on dung slim, it is still worth keeping in mind.
I don't think there is ANY habitat that is void of possibly poisonous mushrooms. With new species being found all of the time, there is still the factor of a random new species popping up as well.

Yes there seems to be a few "unknowns". But do you know of any that are known to be poisonous? I haven't read anything that says conocybe filaris grows on dung, but i'm sure it has some sort of variation that does - as you said about the whole "random new species" thing. But I don't think many people would be tempted to eat conocybe unless it was cyanopus (does that species grow on dung?) The genus is rather fragile and easy to distinguish from panaeolus and psilocybe. What poisonous agrocybes grow on dung? It seems most in that genus are "unknowns".
In any case dung inhabitants are not particularly hard to identify, so if you're having doubts, your mushroom probably isn't active.

i have found deadly white Amanita mushrooms growing from underneath cow patties. of course it was not growing directly from the dung, it was probably growing from tree roots or something. but it appeared as if it was growing from dung.

and potentially poisonous Conocybe species also grow from dung.

Unknown means exactly that - unknown. The vast majority of mushrooms species are of unknown toxicity. For mushrooms that grow on dung it's probably safe to say that they're unknown because dung is not a habitat typically searched for edible mushrooms. After all, who wants to eat something that's growing in shit?

The likelihood of any particular unknown mushroom being dangerously poisonous is probably low. There are chemical (and other) tests that allow for the detection of many of the more common or deadly known toxins. These should be made before any attempt at eating any unknown species. Risking one's life or health unnecessarily is foolish.

If anybody wants to contribute to science by being a guinea pig and trying unknown mushroom species to determine edibility, there is an involved, detailed process to be followed. If you're truly interested, I've mentioned the process a couple times out here, and a search should turn it up.



The reason you're going to catch some shit for the question is that it comes off sounding like (maybe not you, but some people definitely) the querent has come to the conclusion that if they eat anything and everything that's growing (fill in whatever conditions here - in this case, it would be "from shit") it'll be OK because there aren't any known poisonous species they'll end up eating.

There are *very* few rules like that that actually work, and many of them are just plain wrong and will get you poisoned.

Actually all of our vegetablkes are grown in soil enriched with animal shit from many species of four-legged ruminants.

In Asia, they actually use human shit to grow the vegetables.

But toxic is right about the fact that edibles are not associated with manure.

I once knew someone in Oregon who did that and had a llama farm near Eugene. NOt sure if he uesd it more than a few times, but basically the manure of any four-legged ruuminant should work.

I have a pic of this I took last Summer... The mushrooms were growing straght from the cow patty...

I will have to see if I can dig it out! :thumbup:
