Help me identify this little guys found in Eastern Washington on cow dung
    #9278633 -

Habitat:
MY girlfriend and I found these little buggers in a damp, lightly wooded cow pasture. Some were growing directly out of the cow manure, some were growing in the middle of the medium height grass (3 inches long). We live in Eastern Washington and went hunting a day after heavy rainfall. I'm new to shrooming and found what resembles P. Cys. We took a few home, dried them out and stupidly ate a few (like 5). Fortunately they were not deadly, unfortunately they were not psychedelics either. Help us solve the mystery of these P. Cy look alikes. Thanks guys!

Gills:
The Gills are white with slight brown fading towards the outside.

Stem:
The stem is average length compared to  the cap size. Without any nodes or rings. The thing that threw me off the idea of P. cys is the light brown stem, matching the color of the cap. I hear the cys have a noticeably white stem.

Cap:
The caps range from the size of a dime to the size of a quarter or slightly larger. It's brown fading sometimes in a target manner to a lighter tan or almost white (when fresh). Browning when dried.

Spore print color:
Ahhhhh, I know this is very important but I am a beggining shroomer and have not yet perfected the spore sample technique. We will be hunting in the same area today so I will bring back some fresh'uns and attempt a spore print.

Bruising:
No bruising! another trait that makes me believe I have something other than P. Cys.

Other information:
I got some pics, I'll take some in the field today for better identification. Thank you all sooooo much for helping us out!

Those look nothing like Psilocybe cyanescens.

I believe you found Gymnopus dryophilus, an inactive species.

There is a common deadly species in your area that look MUCH more like Psilocybe cyanescens then these do. (Galerina marginata)

I have never heard of a Gymnopus (or Psilocybe cyanescens) growing out of manure, I am not convinced that your find really are dung mushrooms, it would be cool to see a pic of them growing out of a cow pattie.

There are no actives that grow out of cow patties in the PNW.  You should be looking in piles of horse manure for Panaeolus cinctulus.  Every horse farm has massive piles of manure, laying out to compost.

If that doesn't work for you, drive to the coast and hunt in wood chips near there.

Thank you for your help with these little guys. Like I said, I'm a beginning shroomer so for me to think they're Cyans is probably more hopeful wishing. I have done a lot of reading on those Galerina beasts and am keeping my eye out for them. A good id method I've heard for those is their distinct ring around the stem, which I've seen none.

We are headed to the same area again today for some hunting. Weather they be Gymnopus or not, I'll post some pictures of them growing DIRECTLY out of the dung. My camera ran outta batteries last time I was out there. Thank you for your help though man.

Awesome!

If you can do that I will retract my Gymnopus dryophilus ID and get to work on finding out what they really are.

Use macro mode on the camera and try to get some good pics of the underside of the cap.

Spore print is probably white, btw.  Try making some prints on tinfoil so you can see them.

Galerinas don't always exhibit a veil or annulus.
This is one mushroom you really need to know how to ID.
One mushroom can be enough to do serious damage or kill you.

If it were me and I ate five unknown mushrooms (I would not) I would be trying like hell to find out what they were.

Please don't eat any more unknown mushrooms.

Started raining here in good 'ol Washington State so I had to call my hunt early, I'll head out again later. Fortunately I got what I came for. Found a few other, oranger lookin' mushies but not too concerned with them at the moment. anyways here are a couple of habitat photos of the original Gymnopus looking ones, followed by the controversial Gymnopus growing DIRECTLY out of cow poop. Kind of hard to see because it's growing off the side of the pattie. oh ya, macros is on for these ones.

Growing out of the ground

Gill shot, as requested

Look closely at the stem, connected directly to the side of the pattie

same one, same pattie

thank you for your help again, Alan

That cow pattie does not appear to be old enough to be colonized and fruiting mushrooms.

It looks to me like its fruiting from the grass and the cow happened to poop there.  If you find any growing out of the side or top of the cow pattie it would be different.

Gymnopus dryophilus is edible but only fruits under oak.  Are there any of those around?

It might be another Gymnopus or Clitocybe species fruiting from a nearby pine tree.  It looks mycorrhizal to me, doesn't look anything like any of the other dung mushrooms.

Heh, I do realize the risk I took by eating them. buuuut, in my own defense... Please realize that I didn't just take a handful of 5 down the hatch. I used a method that's been used and taught by many. While doing this I had Ipecac syrup on hand and a fully capable sober driver for any emergency hospital trip that could be necessary (ER is a 7min drive away). I cut a small piece from the dried cap (approx. 1-2cm squared), waited 2 hours and found nothing different physically, emotionally, or mentaly. After the 2 hours, I doubled the dose (about half a dried cap). I then waited another 2 hours, to find that I was feeling good as normal. After this I decided that edibility is plausable so I ate an entire cap and stem.

***I did this in a very controlled environment where I was comfortable and close to help at all times. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THESE METHODS TO ANYONE. Just thought I'd post in my defense***

it was still stupid. If you had eaten a seriously toxic species I doubt Ipecac syrup would have done shit for you.

Since the deadly mushrooms have a latency period of 6 - 12 hours before they give any negative effects, the method you describe would not have helped at all had they been the wrong ones.

Can you name one person who has taught that method?  Or successfully used it?

There is a similar method that works only on plants.  It takes a week to safely do but can be condensed down into 3 days if you don't mind sacrificing a little safety.  The first step is to rub some of the plant into your skin and wait for reactions.

Deadly mushrooms cause no skin reactions and have no unique taste.  I know because have tasted four different species of deadly mushrooms.  Its only ok to taste poisonous mushrooms if you make sure not to swallow any bits and wash your mouth out real good with water a few seconds afterwards.

Ipecac syrup will help save you from deadly mushroom poisoning if you take it soon after you eat the mushrooms.  If you finish your meal and then someone is like "hey, who took my bag of death caps from the fridge", throwing up would help immensely.  I would personally skip the ipecac and hit the back of my throat with a toothbrush for a minute (a much better way to trigger the gag reflex), then go directly to the emergency room to have my stomach pumped and get all the little bits out.

Since the deadly mushrooms don't begin make you sick until 6 - 12 hours later, by that time the mushrooms will no longer be in your stomach and throwing up won't help at all.

This is true, the method is supposed to be done 4+ times consecutively. Thus any effect can be noticed before the amount is large enough to kill the eater.

I will mention again, this method is NOT recommended to anyone be me so please do not try. I was simply explaining that the way I went about it is a safer way than just popping 5 full unidentified mushies at once. Ipecac syrup does take time to take effect, and this is one thing I took into consideration. Toothbrush method and finger method is a lot quicker and more effective for emergency stomach flushing.

I did take a chance with these little shrooms and fortunately I'm 100% fine.

ya, me!

heh, thank you guys for the information both on IDing this strain as well as your safety tips

makes for good reading
