Comments on the book... i have no read it, and i dont really know what its about, so this post is mainly to ask if its a good read....

It's a great read, a great portrait of a time and a place and a feeling and an atmosphere.

Wolfe does a great job communicating the LSD experience - it didn't hurt that he had Kesey talking in his ear the whole time.

a great book, although it's worth noting that the majority of the pranksters really disliked Wolfe, thought he was a narc, etc... and he never tried acid once while writing it.

According to the book he tried LSD. Its possible that he denies it in real life for personal reasons. Its also possible that he said he tried it in the book to make it more interesting. I've seen an interview with Thomas Wolfe about a year or two ago on a late night talk show. Of course this is several decades later, but he doesn't seem like the Merry Prankster type. He seems quiet and reserved. Maybe its old age, or maybe he was always boring. I dunno. In any case, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test is a fantastic book. A must-read. The next book on my "to read" list is Demon Box by Ken Kesey.

Great book. I honestly don't believe he could have written that book without at least taking acid once. The style in which the book is written is so psychedelic. He really captures the psychedelic experience in a way that I don't think mere observation could inhibit. Sure he was an outsider but to write that book he had to at least for a day become a participant rather than a mere observer.

I actually have a copy of a video on VHS of the last Acid Test. Its actual footage shot by the pranksters before, during, and after the test while it was being broken up by police. If I only knew what Thomas Wolfe looked like back then I could see if he showed up on the video. If I remember correctly, that was the same day that he took acid.

Hmmm, I wish I had a working VHS player.

it's a great book...

but, if you aren't familiar with the psychedelic experience and/or not a very good reader, you may have trouble with it.

Great book. I loved it.

and about whether or not he took any acid himself. I can attest to this, i personally met tom wolfe at my school, he was doing a reading and i had him sign my book. while he was signing it i said

"mr. wolfe, you depict an acid trip so well in this book it makes me wonder whether you partook in any of it yourself"
he replied
"i started to, but you know, it's a really powerful drug. You've got to also consider however that i was spending time with a man who completely blew out his visual cortex on that stuff so..."

so there you have it.

i'm assuming it was kesey.

yea it was really cool meeting him... all decked out in his white suit. so freaking cool. he had such interesting things to say about america. and american culture, how things have changed... all in all a really nice cool man.
