The fan on my dehydrator died. I am trying to wire a computer fan to this. Is there any way to wire a 12v computer fan into the wall socket? I tried hooking the wires up directly and blew one fan. Any help is appreciated.

ever have a train set? the transformer from a train set can be used to stepdown voltage from the wall enough to be safe for a pc fan.

If you tried plugging a PC fan straight into the wall it wouldn't blow up, but I'm entirely certain that it would burn and it's very possible it would start a fire.

Oh. It sparked and popped and stunk really bad...Lol. Nope , no train sets. Anything else? I have a computer power supply sitting next to me. I think it is a 160w supply...

I dont know if that would work without a motherboard.

Go to radio shack and ask a salesman for a transformer that could do what you're trying to do. They might be able to help.

Would 9v work on a 12v?

Yes, a small step down transformer is what you need. They ain't made to take 120 volts!

Voltages lower than something is rated for are always safe. If it's a 12v fan and you give it 9v, it will just spin a lot slower than at 12v.

A stepdown transformer isn't too pricey though. Radio shack will have one that suits your needs, it's just a matter of looking in that aisle until you find it.

Your wall outlet is 120 volts AC. Your fan is 12 volts DC. If you plug a low voltage DC fan into a wall outlet you are going to see smoke, fire, and a possible hospital stay.

Buy an AC to DC adapter. These are available at Radio Shack and even Wal-mart. They often plug into answering machines and small stuff like that. Get one that is able to be set on different voltages (3, 6, 9, 12, etc..). Find one that has the ability to be set on 12 volts DC. Hook the two connections at the end of that to your fan.

If you really want to get in-depth, you can make your own AC to DC adapter with a bridge rectifier (4 diodes put together basically), a potentiometer, and a resistor. Given how inexperienced with electronics you sound though....I would not suggest this experiment.

I forgot to mention the AC problem, oops.

Randall gave the right idea though. If the DC converter has a male/female thing at the end, just cut it off and solder the leads from the fan to the leads from the converter. Or, twist them together and wrap in electrical tape to keep them from being exposed (health hazard, and they tend to get carpet lint in them and make poor contact).

Besides, DC current is almost harmless when compared to AC current.
