we're still Cubs fans o'er here in Chicago
    #2125616 - 11/20/03 06:42 PM (13 years, 22 days ago)

This season was truly a heartbreak for us. I know, most of you don't give a shit about baseball, but for the one's that do I'd like to share a little rambling.

My father is 53 years old and a complete nut when it comes to baseball. He's lived through the 69 disaster, the 84 disaster, the 89 disaster, and now the 02 disaster.

In game six of the nlcs we had our usual group of friends stashed in my brother's apt living room just one block from wrigley field. We had 5 tv's set up and only a small strong cubs constituence of 20 cubs fans.

We were counting the outs to a world series that night. We started at 27 and sat on the edge of our seats the entire game. By the 7th inning we were confident...foolishly confident. We felt that our bad luck was over, finally behind us.

I was sitting on the floor w/ 5 outs to go. Juan piere was coming to the plate and my dad, sitting behind me on the couch said, "i can't believe this!!! We're 5 outs from the world series. I just can't believe we're going to the world series." We were all talking that way. It just didn't feel real, we couldn't believe that our team was 5 small outs away from the world series w/ the most talented pitcher in baseball shutting the marlins down.

Then as everyone knows tradgedy occurred and Steven Bartman's dumb fuck'n ass turned the tide and broke thousands of cub fan's hearts.

over a month has passed and it's still very difficult to swallow. My dad has always talked about 1969 and the collapse of the cubs, not suprisingly started by the curse of a black cat running on the field.

I was only 8 in 84 and 12 in 89 so I was still a little guy. This year's ending is our generation's 1969...and it's a year, a feeling, a hope and a dream and a sadness that neither I or any of my friends will ever forget nor ever get over.

A lot of people who don't really know baseball have their opinions about the outcome of the nlcs...and a lot of their opinions are wrapped by foolish rational and misplaced sympathy. This has made the experience all the more difficult to bear in the aftermat.

My father emailed me today concerning the cub's future. He kept his feelings to himself, but makes an astute point....a point that may seem ridiculously foolish to most everyone, but one that represents the dream that a deservingly loyal cubs fan bears.

We fans feel we're never meant to feel the joy of a world series. We're cursed and we know it. This year's team spoke about not believing in a curse against the team. The truth is the sooner they believe in the curse the sooner they may someday break the curse. We really believe this, but we'll always hope and dream and cheer and root for our cubbie blue.

Here's the email that my father sent below. The responses were abundant and most weren't very kind, but I omitted them.

Boys,

Here is my final thought on the status of the Chicago Cubs. I have
purposely withheld publicizing my opinion to allow the dust to settle.

The team and management needs to be completely turned over before the Cubs
will ever get within 5 outs of the World Series again. That means everyone
connected with the team must be gone. Dusty, Sammy, Kerry, Prior, Corey,
Ramirez, Gonzalez, Borowski, Choi, Zambrano, Hendry, EVERYONE MUST GO!!!!

No Cub team since 1969 has EVER gotten close to their previous high water
mark when the circumstance surrounding their collapse has been gut
wrenching. NOT A ONE!!!!!!!!! EVER!!!!!!!!!!! The entire 2003
organization MUST be gutted to rid the Cubs of what is now ingrained into
all of their minds and souls. The sooner they start the sooner we'll see
them back in a position to seriously contend for a pennant again. Thinking
that the likes of Mark Prior, Kerry Wood, Corey Patterson and Dusty Baker
are the answer to our dream for a pennant is foolish. Their psyches have
been damaged beyond repair.

If they don't start this process soon it will be 15-20 years before we see
another season like this one. I am 53 years old and I believe realistically
that I have one more chance, two at the outside, to see them make the World
Series. The next 3-5 years are already wasted due to the Sammy Sosa
issue/contract. That will leave 10-15 years of rebuilding after he's gone
and by then everyone will be gone anyhow so I say start immediately so when
Sammy is finally out of town you'll have a new roster of players in place 5
years form now who will once again feel and play like the history/curse of
the Cubs is nonsense. If you start today maybe you cut the waiting period
to 10 years instead.

Agree or disagree, time will prove me right. You'll see that this is what
must be done. The clock has been ticking for a month already.

As an alternative plan I say it's time to put out a contract on Yosh Kawano.
Think about it......................

Dad

...obviously this is unrealistic, but his words show what cub fans believe. ...and sammy's ass should have been traded 2-3 years ago when we could've gotten tons for him. Now no one wants his over paid soon to be broken down broken ass spanglish speakin zit poppin droid.

:PShrew

True Story:

After the last game, they had bartmans neighbor on the news, well we knew steves full name, his neighbors full name, and the city they lived in, i dont think they ever said the city but they sure did plaster the police cars onto the screen, so we looked em both up, made sure they were neighbors called up his neighbor and told them that they should go tell there neighbor that he was the biggest douch in the world. We also plan to send him a baseball when next season starts with a little note telling him to just take this ball with him to the games so he dosnt feel the need to take a ball from a players hand.

I used to be really into baseball. Get this, I was a Braves fan. Not a Turner fan; a Braves fan. You know, Phil Niekro, Dale Murphy, Bob Horner, and crew. I remember sitting in dugout seats for $15. While Cubs fans share the pain of never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever seeing the series there is no paralell to the pain of first watching the entire sport completely sell out (strike remember?) and then your team sell out and half the world jump on their bandwagon. Today I say fuck baseball! Anything beyond little league is bullshit. In fact most sports are. Hockey and Tennis seem to be the only sports with any real heart and soul left.

You might not even feel that way about hockey after the scheduled lockout/walkout next year......the players blame the owners and vice versa, everythings about money now, i don't even know if "sports" exist anymore :frown:

You're harrasing a guy for trying to catch a foul ball? You must be really stupid. If you think Steve Bartman is to blame for the Cubs BLOWING a 3-1 lead in the NLCS then yes, you are stupid.

Shrew: Most of those players your father mentioned are still under contract, it will be very hard to move them. The team is still good, there are moves that need to be made to make them better. Dusty Baker is already my favorite Cubs manager of all time. He's the most savvy and intelligent leader they've ever had at the position. I think he's going to be a big winner in Chicago.

my father was speakin out of the pain he's feels from watchin this team lose so many years. of course these are players you wouldn't want to get rid of.

concerning bartman, for the record.....if bartman doesn't go for the foul ball then louis castillo would have popped out and not gotten on base. Alex gonzales would have never made an error at short b/c the entire pitch sequence would have been completely different...and even if a grounder was hit to him he wouldn't be attempting to turn a double play, thus would be concentrating on only getting a put out at 1st and the entire outcome of the game would've been completely different...

I've sat in Bartman's seats plenty of times and the excuse used that you are watchin the ball and aren't aware where the fielder is is b/s. You can't help but see the fielder attempting a play on the ball cuz he's right infront of you. Also, bartman was wearing headphones and listening to the game on the radio. The radio comentator extactically was calling that Moises alou was attempting a play for the ball...so he heard it in his headset.

Lastly, any cubs fan that has lived and suffered watching this team lose and knows what it would mean to the city's fans if it made the world series would not have made an attempt for that ball...not when it's that close to the field of play in the 8th inning of the clinching game of the nlcs.

Any fan that would call themselves a cubs fan who would admitt to going for the ball just as bartman did if found in the same situation is an idiot and isn't a true cubs fan. Any other person (self proclaimed cubs fan or not-including bartman) who would have gone for the ball is an idiot and shouldn't deserve to attend a cubs post season game, period.

Thousands of die hard cubs fans couldn't get tickets and couldn't go to games cuz dickwads like bartman was in attendance...and no die hard cubs fan would've jeopardized any slight chance that would pass the cubs path and help them get into the world series.

Every cubs fan that I know, and I know a shitload of them...all feel the same way as me. Bartman's an ass. His name will never be forgotten, nor will he ever be forgiven. His dumb ass completely changed the momentum of the series and anyone who knows anything about post season sports knows how important momentum is...particularly when it deals w/ the cubs and our curse.

The cubs organization should ban bartman from wrigely field for life. Then they should ban his offspring from wrigley field for life so they don't follow in their dad's footsteps and make an ass out of themselves as well.

Fak the Cubbies.
Cubbies fans always come up to Milwaukee when they play the Brewers and get all drunk and pick fights and get arrested for drunk and disorderlies, then drive back to the North side all wasted down I94 and get in drunk driving accidents. I do love Wrigley tho.
At least the cubs aint the brewers (speaking in terms of at least some current success). the brewers really suck.
