places of travel

if the world was open, if you could drop your finger on a map and go there, where would you go?

my friend and i are planning on doing a motorcycle tour for around a month or two. we want to cover large areas and see as much as possible.
the thought started off as doing an america tour (where i live), but america will always be here, and once we start working, we may never have this much leisure time again. then we thought of from germany (where he lives) through southern europe and to africa with a fairee from spain, and explore africa. but its damn dangerous in africa, especially now.

so now we are think of america again, australia, or asia possibly including india.
america again, same dilema as above, its always here, its where im already at, etc.
australia is damn far and both of us would have to buy a bike etc, in stead of one already owning one there and only one of us needing to buy one.
asia sounds the best to me. hes going to be in china for a year teaching english, and then when he finishes his year we could start the tour from there. he will already have a bike anyway, and i could get one there relatively cheap. theres a lot too see in asia, and god knows when i will have a chance again to travel freely there.

what about you guys, what would you do?

we just got back from spending 3 and 1/2 weeks down in Antigua in the west indies. In August we're probably going to Indonesia for 2 and 1/2 weeks to do a tour of Borobudur, dine with the royal family and travel to some remote villages and temples - should be a blast.

I also would like to try to go to the Galapagos Islands at some point....that sounds fun.

if you travel through north-africa or the middle-east/central asia it might be helpful to have an arabic speaker along with you. really, when travelling in any context (esp non-western, but really anywhere), i find it helpful to be with somebody who is from the region, who can serve as a bit of a guide

If i could plonk myself anywhere in the world i wanted, i'd go to New York so that i could visit the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, go on a tour of filming locations from the Sopranos in New Jersey and just see what America's like in general! I'd also love to go to Sweden or Norway to see the Northern Lights, that would be amazing. Chamonix would be next on the list, staying in a wooden cabin in the snowy mountains for some skiing, snowboarding and Jaegermeister  But that's just me really... Africa and Asia hold no appeal to me whatsoever. I would thoroughly recommend Amsterdam to anybody though!

my friend and i are going to be bumming around europe this summer. he has family in austria and switzerland so when we pass though there we will have a place to stay and other than that we will just be sleeping on trains and what not. should be pretty fun, we plan to spend three months traveling from country to country

I'd probably throw on my fedora and indiana jones clothes... and go visit the countries he visited in the movies.

I'd obviously be doing entirely different things, but it would be fun to get off the plane dressed as indiana jones before getting my tourist thing on.
