Going Snowboarding for 1st time
    #5148531 -

I've been skiing once in my life, and never snowboarding. Tomorrow a couple friends and I am going snowboarding. I think they've all been snowboarding before.

I never have. Is it easy to do? Any pointers? What am I in for?

I tried once, but I had such trouble balancing that I just traded them in for skiis. Are you afraid of falling? Because you probably will.

It helps if you have skateboarded or surfed before. You will fall on your hips, knees and rump!

Don't be afraid of falling, be afraid of the trees!!! They are out to get you! But seriously controll the board don't let it controll you, and if your friends are any good be prepared to do a few runs by yourself. Spending 50 bucks to go to the mountain and have to spend it on you knees or ass waiting fore someone who can't board sucks.

Yeah I think we're going to smoke at various intervals during the day.

So what I'm gathering from you all is that I'm going to fall. Is there a better way to fall? I mean, should I fall backwards?

try to fall on your ass. try to stay out of the woods. I know its the best place to smoke but you can sink if its too powdery. Its nice to plant your self down and kinda pack a seat in the ground for smokeing.

Seriously, I don't think I have one friend who hasn't snowboarded before (We're spoiled in Alaska).

Tips:

If you're gonna fall, fall on your ass.

If you fall, keep your board UP if possible, broken ankles are no fun.

If you're starting to get too much speed to control, try to turn uphill or just fall, better to take the fall then find out there's a cliff ahead

Don't let your friends get you drunk and leave you at the top of the mountain your first time (although I did alright) it's scary

Honestly that's how I learned to snowboard. I was totally wasted and had a full flask in my pocket to boot. I don't even remember how they convinced me to go to the very top, but it was a hell of an interesting first trip down.

[re:dblaney]

i just went tuesday for my 1st time,
ive skateboarded since i could walk pretty much,
so i picked it up really really fast.
the 1st 3 times were on the bunny slopes, (gay)
got the jist of it & went fullballs on the big slope,
did that mountain 3 times before the park closed.
now all i want to do is go back.

you WILL fall at least a hundred times
my pointers are:
im regular footed (left foot forward/lead foot)
(hopefully you are too so this makes sense)
(for reference:
toe-in= toes digging in the snow/heels out of the snow.
toe-out= toes out of the snow/digging in the snow with heels)

if yer going straight down the hill, make sure your upper torso is parallel with the board
(as you would riding a skateboard)
and the marjority of your weight is on the back right leg. ( or whatever leg is not leading (depending on the direction yer traveling)

do not have your upper torso (shoulders) facing forward.
steer with your lead shoulder and lean in that direction with your upper torso.
for example:
if i wanted to carve to the left, toe-out,
i would lean(steer) my left shoulder back and be placing
my weight on my heels & lifting my toes in the air.
more weight & lean to the right back leg.

if i wanted to carve to the right, toe-in,
i would lean(steer) my left shoulder in (to the right),
and be placing my weight on my toes,
lifting my heels in the air.

you wont be able to carve immediately,
how i learned was going down the hill
making really wide turns (think u-turns)
until i was going back up the hill
and gravity would stop me, then travel opposite lead-foot direction & toe-out in a big U-turn.

let me try to explain in another way:

start off making your turns, toe-in,
wait till gravity stops you,
then gravity pushes you back down opposite lead shoulder & opposite lead foot.
where you will turn using toe-out in the same fashion.

once you get the hang of that, try to pull your U-turns in & smaller.,
smaller & tighter each time until yer carving
left to right like a pro.

once you get that, everything else comes really easy.
its all about making your weight transfers to flow
fluidily.

just remember, "heel toe, heel toe, repeat"
& also, you CAN bend the board in your favor, so do it up.
good luck bro.

wish i was going with ya!
i  snowboarding.

First off, don't put your weight on your back leg. Ideally you should have your weight equal. If you have trouble keeping your weight off of your back foot, try putting it on your front foot.

Real advice, dont take advice from someone who said they just went snowboarding for the first time because they dont know what they are doing.

No offense 40.

But if you really want to learn how to snowbaord get lessons. Most people who have taught themselves to snowboard might be able to get down the mountain, but really have no idea what they are doing.

Be prepared for some serious ass pain. Just make sure that you don't fall on your hands. It's instinct, but if you're falling, try to put out your elbows. It's easy to break a wrist.

The hardest part of learning for me was getting used to going parallel with the slope.

Get yourself a snowboard-skiing helmet. Trust me - you will be going downslope at speeds of 35 mph, and accidents happen all the time, and trees are most unforgiving.

Nope, if your falling forward you want to fall to your knees first, if possible, and then use your forearms. You were close, but if your on hard pack or ice and you use your elbows to break your fall you can break those as well.

And i think you mean perpindicular.
