Whats up with all of you Shroomerites and Grateful Dead?
    #5144656 -

Truthfully, I've never listened to a single song of theirs.

So what I'm asking is that if you could post one song by them that you think would get someone to like them, which song would it be?

Make me a believer.

I've only heard a few songs myself, and never got the kind of exposure I'd need to be a fan...

but I've been known to get "Fire on the Mountain" stuck in my head for days at a time. It's just a catchy, fun song.

Shakedown Street =

Before I moved, we always drank at this little divey sports bar. Their digital jukebox thingie had a huge variety of popCRAP, some classic rock & country.... and a lot of Grateful Dead! Every night of good drinking we did at that bar we pooled our cash and owned the box.

I always started my slections with Shakedown. And you could literally see the vibe/mood change in the bar when the Dead came over the speakers! I know I can feel the change in myself everytime I hear a good jam.

The song Ripple while beautiful is not really representative of the range and scope of the band.

a live show would be the way to go......something from 1971 through 1977 for starters.

I recently made a mixed dead CD in which I randomly chose Shakedown Street as the first song.. it definitely makes a good opener  .. I just love the way it flows.

Other favorites might include; St Stephens, Sugar Magnolia, Scarlet Begonias, Franklins Tower, Mexicali Blues, China Cat Sunflower, Fire on the Mountain, Turn on your Lovelight, Ripple, Till the Morning Comes.. gah so many..

The Brown Eyed Women from that show isn't too impressive. I mean, it's not bad...just the solo is lacking, and it's a lil slower paced sounding. I'll check out the rest of the show later.

Yeah, that's damn hard to pick just one song. I like a rockin' Saturday Night, with Bob wailing on the vocals. Or Not Fade Away is a great live song. My personal favorite is St Stephen, and I really like those Aoxomoxoa tunes, but that isn't everyone's cup o' tea. I find Dark Star in my head a lot lately...
Okay I decided: China Cat Sunflower.
No wait, Scarlet Begonias.
Or Morning Dew?

Space .  .  .

So true brother. I mean there is always Terrapin Station, Sugar Magnolias, Estimated Prophet, Turn On Your Love Light, Scarlet Begonias, Casey Jones, Truckin, Fire On The Mountain, What a Wonderful World (cover), Ripple, Samson and Delilah, Dancing In The Streets, Morning Dew, Sugaree, Shakedown Street .... and so so so many more. They were not just a band. They were the band chosen to carry the torch until such a time as it would be passed to another band. They were called to help spread the light. It's a brotherhood not just a bunch of deadheads hanging out listening to music getting high, alothough I am sure there was alot of that going on. That is besides the point though.

BTW I just realized there was a kind of mean "tone", if you will, to my post. It was not meant that way.

I hope you find a song you like and get into the dead and understand what an important role they played in the world. A role which, in my humble opinion, still needs to be carried on.

The one below is a nice version Yarry, but you should also know that the words are very special!

Some of Robert Hunters best!

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung,
Would you hear my voice come thru the music,
Would you hold it near as it were your own?

It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken,
Perhaps they're better left unsung.
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air.

Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty,
If your cup is full may it be again,
Let it be known there is a fountain,
That was not made by the hands of men.

There is a road, no simple highway,
Between the dawn and the dark of night,
And if you go no one may follow,
That path is for your steps alone.

Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.

But if you fall you fall alone,
If you should stand then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home.

As a starter song, I'd recommend Terrapin Station from 2/26/77. It was more or less the first Grateful Dead song I heard aside from Touch of Grey back in the 80's. My current favorites are:

Eyes of the World
Brown Eyed Women
Bird Song

On a nice sunny day Take a stereo, cdplayer, Ipod(if u must), go to hill, field , valley(preferably next to a river) smoke a j, drop some acid, eat some mushrooms, or do it sober, and listen to Sugar Magnolia and i guarantee you will start dancing around with a huge smile on your face wondering whatyouve been missing.
