How to tell if LC is contaminated? *PIC*
    #5064531 -

Hey guys, im just wondering how can one tell if an LC is contaminated? I have lots of white fluffy "clouds" floating around. But there are some areas that are darker, kind of a brown black, and lots of black specks, but i think the specks are spores. I have no FAE in my LC, thye are completely sealed so i dont know how they could be contaminated. Could these discolored areas just be a biproduct of the myc, or maybe dead myc, or somehow related to the lack of FAE? I am going to be using a gallon container and use the method agar uses for the next LC, but i wanna be sure this isnt contaminated before i use it to innoc a larger amount. I can post a pic if necessary.

It can very difficult to spot an infected LC, which is one reason I do not use them. The only way I know of to make sure is to inoculate a test jar and see if it contaminates.

So the darker spots may actually be insignificant? I did innoc 8 CC jars just prior to making this post, thats when i noticed the darker areas, its only small portions of some of the "clouds" that are darker.

They may be; you'll know either way in a few days.

Yes..correct...you could also try a petrie dish...you'll see contaminant quicker...

How do you check it in a petri dish please?

Well heres a pic:

The black spot if what the other spots look like, its hard to get a pic through the comtainer, but, the spots are all atached to white clouds, so im thinking its a biproduct of the myc, like so called "piss" just contained in the cloud. There are larger spots, but the small one is the only one i could get in the pic.

I searched ere and founfd nothing, but i just searched the contam forum and found one thread pertaining to this, the guy said he injected 2cc of h202 into the LC and the spots cleared up most of the way, is this a good idea, should i try it and see what happens??

alright good, because right now 90-95% of the "cloud" in the picture is defenitely healthy myc, but 5-10% is brown black clouds, so id like to try it now if ever:)

Alright i guess ill try it then, right now 90-95% of the cloud pictured is certainly healty myc, while the other is questionable so i think if ever, now is the time to try it. Any other imput as well? This was microwave sterilized, but it was kept at 170-180 degress for 10-15 minutes so i think it shouldve been sterile, and it was never opened, only accessed through a hole in the top electrical taped sut, the only thing entering it ever was a sterilized needle, either by bleach or PC the needle was always 100% sterile. So i dont know how ti couldve got in, not only is the container closed and selaed well, it is also duct taped over the edges , so i cant imagine it being contaminated?

You would have to make agar and pour it into a petri dish. Inoculate the center of the agar with the suspect LC and incubate. The mycelium will grow and so will any contamination.

Inoculate 3 or 4 dishes and if all contaminate, you got a problem.

Inject small test jars. These jars started out with small black dots

O god, mine dont look anything like that, just little whisps attached to the bigger white clouds of myc.

The black dots I've seen on mycelium clouds are what look like germinated spores. I'm thinking that when they absorb water and pop open, they can sometimes be large enough to see with the naked eye.

That's at least what it looked like when I checked it out under a microscope - a little black dot with a myc strand or two popping out of it.

Hmm, yeah i can see a few dead spores in there. But that would explain why the black wisps are all attached to the could, maybe just germinated spores, or clumps of them that popped, and swelled in the solution(i put 1-1.5cc's in each 2 cup LC container). They dont seem to be spreading, and there is no odor that i can tell. Well i have 4cc of H202 ready to go, 2cc for each 2 cup container. Is that too much, and/or will it hurt it? Just to see if this does indeed reduce the size of these black spots. I have as i said already innoc'd 8 jars of cracked corn with the LC, so in 3 days or so id hope ill see if it was good or not for sure, but anything i can find out in the meantime is also very helpful to my learning experience:)

If the LC turns stinky or milky, it's bacterially contaminated. If the LC is growing a lot faster than usual, it is contaminated with mold probably. If you've worked with LCs and you know how things are _supposed_ to progress, you can tell you have an infection if they don't progress just like that. It can be tricky if you don't have experience with problems.
