Nice little logic problem

Try to solve it in under 5 minutes. It really isnt all that hard, but it makes your mind work. Dont google it, either, that's lame :frown:

It was taken from a friend on another forum, who had it on a college exam.




Wine Splitting Dilemma
Two Roman wine stewards had just completed their Holiday deliveries
(these were the enlightened times of the Roman empire;
they celebrated special days even if not identified yet).

Surprisingly they had a full eight gallon jug of wine left over.
They decided that they would split the wine into equal shares,
but they only had three different size jugs to make the portioning.
They had the eight gallon jug full, an empty three gallon jug and
an empty five gallon jug. The jugs were unmarked (all they knew
was that the jugs were either full or empty) and no other measuring
device was available.
How can they accomplish this equal division?

The following assumptions exist:

- no liquid is spilled (too valuable to waste)
- no liquid is lost to evaporation (must drink it)
- no wine is prematurely drunk (stewards didn't trust each other)
- the only operation allowed is to pour from one jug to another,
- pouring is stopped whenever a jug is full or a jug is empty
