And they say that the terrorists didn't win:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051129/ap_o...WtkBHNlYwM3MTg-

_________________________________________________________________________

MIAMI - Miami police announced Monday they will stage random shows of force at hotels, banks and other public places to keep terrorists guessing and remind people to be vigilant.

Deputy Police Chief Frank Fernandez said officers might, for example, surround a bank building, check the IDs of everyone going in and out and hand out leaflets about terror threats.

"This is an in-your-face type of strategy. It's letting the terrorists know we are out there," Fernandez said.

The operations will keep terrorists off guard, Fernandez said. He said al-Qaida and other terrorist groups plot attacks by putting places under surveillance and watching for flaws and patterns in security.

Police Chief John Timoney said there was no specific, credible threat of an imminent terror attack in Miami. But he said the city has repeatedly been mentioned in intelligence reports as a potential target.

Timoney also noted that 14 of the 19 hijackers who took part in the Sept. 11 attacks lived in South Florida at various times and that other alleged terror cells have operated in the area.

Both uniformed and plainclothes police will ride buses and trains, while others will conduct longer-term surveillance operations.

"People are definitely going to notice it," Fernandez said. "We want that shock. We want that awe. But at the same time, we don't want people to feel their rights are being threatened. We need them to be our eyes and ears."

Howard Simon, executive director of ACLU of Florida, said the Miami initiative appears aimed at ensuring that people's rights are not violated.

"What we're dealing with is officers on street patrol, which is more effective and more consistent with the Constitution," Simon said. "We'll have to see how it is implemented."

Mary Ann Viverette, president of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, said the Miami program is similar to those used for years during the holiday season to deter criminals at busy places such as shopping malls.

"You want to make your presence known and that's a great way to do it," said Viverette, police chief in Gaithersburg, Md. "We want people to feel they can go about their normal course of business, but we want them to be aware."

In order to keep support up for the war on terror, the public must feel terrorized.

US Air Force unveils hand-held laser gun

By Michael Sirak JDW Staff Reporter
Washington, DC

The US Air Force has unveiled its first hand-held laser weapon that gives security forces a non-lethal option for controlling crowds and protecting areas like checkpoints, according to service officials.

While only in prototype form and years away from fielding, the weapon, known as the Personnel Halting and Stimulation Response (PHaSR) system, holds great promise, they said.

The PHaSR is about the same size and weight of a fully loaded M60 machine gun - around 9 kg - but shoots a low-power beam of laser light instead of bullets. The light it generates is capable of temporarily impairing an individual's vision, much like the disorienting glare one sees when looking into the sun, said the officials.

Upon completion of testing, one prototype will be handed over to the Department of Defense's Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate (JNLWD) and the second to the National Institute of Justice (NIJ): the law enforcement arm of the US Department of Justice. Both organisations support the programme, with the latter interested in its civil applications.

Not even the ACLU has a problem with this. Maybe you need to spend some time in a real police state.

"random shows of force"

Now thats just stupid.

I remember after the Lakers playoff games last year a "police state" surrounded the staples center.. Crews removed any trash that could be set on fire, set up road blocks and nobody was let into an area of 4 blocks around the stadium.. Within the hot zone any group of people standing and talking were "moved along" by the police by pushing them untill they were out of the zone and even then more cops were around to break up groups larger than 5.

It was sad and people were fucking pissed.

This is how it starts folks.

You wouldn't just roll over and give up your rights, your country is too strong for that. So they manufacture a shadowy enemy and begin slowly getting you used to a strong military like presence to "protect" you from this enemy, pretty soon it's guys with guns asking you for your papers comrade...

Stalin did it this way, Hitler did it this way, and now your great country is doing it this way too...

Hitlers scapegoats were Jews and queers, Stalins was capitalists and anti party workers, yours are Muslims and "Terrorists", whatever the hell that means...

You already have prison camps like Nazi Germany, your media is pumping you up full of false patriotism and bravado just like Nazi Germany, and now your starting to see heavy police presence in your urban centers, just like Nazi Germany...

The people of that country were fooled and propagandized into thinking that the changes that they were seeing were for their protection at first too, in fact they supported them! Just like a majority of your people are doing now...

How long is it going to be before you open your eyes?

When they start building large furnaces at Guantanamo?

Maybe the ACLU is too busy defending child molesters....

Seriously, this sounds like elections/politics. the city is fucked up, and the police are not going to be able to save it.

I grew up in Miami, its becomes more dangerous every year.

Well then you haven't been around recently. Miami's crime problem has improved by leaps and bounds in the last ten years although since 2000 some crime has been increasing.

This is absolute bullshit i hope i never run into one of those terror parades.

maybe in some areas.

my aunts neighborhood is trying to get permission to
Barricade their streets.

Miami, FL
Miami's violent crime rate is the highest in the nation, with especially high incidences of robbery and assault. Thankfully, the murder rate is relatively low.

Shaking your head at my post?

What part of keeping people in camps and torturing them, in a place outside of any regulatory impartial third party to monitor what's going on, is this okay with you?

Call me a "limp wristed lib" or a "hippy treehugger" all you want but this is NOT okay with me.

The "terrorist" held in that camp are REAL people, with REAL families who may or may not even be guilty of any crime whatsoever.

No one even knows if they have done anything wrong because they aren't even allowed to have a trial!

People in the world RIGHT NOW are "disappearing" into Guantanamo, and all your country can say is "take our word for it"...fuck that man...I bought that load of crap when they said "trust us, Saddam has WMD's?...

How would you like it if your son or daughter ended up in that place because "American intelligence" says that they are al-queda...

We all know how good American intelligence is after all...

I cannot believe that people are willing to stand for it just because of the specter of some media manufactured "boogie-man" called terrorism!
