anyone here keep bettas, or any fish for that matter?

My girlfriend got me into keeping bettas. They're cheap and relatively easy to take care of provided you have time to change their water maybe once or twice a week. I've gotten to the point that everytime I go to a store like Meijer or Wal*Mart I have to stop and check them out.. which usually makes me want to buy at least one just to save them from a pitiful existence on a store shelf in about 2 inches of water (if they're lucky).

I've been considering refilling my 10-gal and trying to start a new aquarium setup with a few different kinds of fish, since male bettas must be kept seperately from each other (and lots of other fish). I just gotta buy a new filter and heater, and some fish of course..

a few years ago me & my friends
used to walk by those betas in those litle containers in walmart
& we'd put 2 in 1 & watch tem rip the shit ut of eachother.

I have a 55 gallon with 2 old discus in it.
They are some tired old things, they have been in there for 8 years.

those are some badass aquariums. probably in the thousands of dollars to build and maintain something like that though.. i'm sure it's worth it if you can afford to.

mine is fucked up right now.. i guess it has some kind of fungus or parasite or bacteria.  treated its water for ick & fungus, i hope it's one of the two so the shit will heal it.

thought it might be fin rot but it's acting too weird, like it's just kind of floating around in one spot with minimal movement and it won't eat.. :thumbdown:

Back in the early to mid Eighties I used to breed Discus while my live-in girlfriend bred Bettas.

They're not very difficult to breed and it is completely fascinating watching the whole breeding process -- the male building the nest, the actual mating itself (really neat), the male rescuing the eggs and spitting them back up into the floating nest over and over for days, the male then chasing down the fry and spitting them back up into the nest for a few more days....

My girlfriend got really good at selective breeding. She ended up specializing in "doubletails" in solid colors. She had greens, blues, reds, yellows, whites, and even some blacks. We took some of her best to a fish club show and auction in Buffalo New York and one of her black doubletail females won top prize in the Betta section, then got auctioned off for US $65!!! That was a LOT of money for a female Betta to fetch back in '83 or '84, believe me. That female brought more than even the black doubletail males she was auctioning. People at the show said they'd never seen anything like that kind of bidding on a Betta. Not even close.

You might want to look into breeding a few batches yourself. It really is a fascinating thing to watch. And you end up with a whole whap of Bettas you can sell to recoup your investment.

I'd love to try to breed them sometime, but I'm way too new at this to even consider it right now. I'm still trying to nurse my present fish back to health.. it looks like it's dying. It's completely listless, barely swims, just kind of floats around, its tail is discolored and seems to be deteriorating. All kinds of fucked up.

I have a cichlid. I'm not sure what kind he is. My old tennent left him behind in about 4 inches of water. He was there for 2 weeks before the tennent told me he had moved out. He survived that entire time with no food or heat of anykind.

Now he is happy in my livingroom. He lets you know when he is hungry and he has even finned me when I tried to clean his tank the first couple times. He has alot of personality for a fish.
