The all around Fishing thread
    #2672060 - 05/13/04 02:36 AM (16 years, 9 months ago)

I have been fishing all over the United States and was hoping to make this a thread to discuss techniques, what is in season, fishing stories, and basic fishing knowledge/information from around the country so I can broden my horizens. For example

I grew up fishing at the beach and the Intercoastal waterway in Jacksonville Florida, in the May-August months you can catch great Bluefish and whiting(using shrimp as bait, mostly dead cause its cheap and works) right from the shore at beaches like Hannah Park, and anyone where along the jax beach stretch, or the Pier. Also, along in the intercoastal water way some great Sheepshead fishing can be had.

How you catch these: Pick up some Fidler crabs from the bait shop and head to a shipyard. Tie up to a large piling and knock the barnacles off the wood or stone with a paddle... chum it up nice and good. Now, hook a crab, and slowly lower it down right next to the piling about a 1-2 feet away, using at least 15 pound test(because the barnacles are sharp and they fight hard) let it hit the bottom and then reel it up 2-3 feet... this is where the sheepshead come to chow on the barnacles you knocked off. Also, they will swim and get you tied around a piling real quick and your line will deffinitly break, so get them in as quick as possible. They look like this and their meat is like the prime steak of fish(IMO)

really? where you from? I used to always hit up the reds in the intercoastal, as well as flounder.. ever gone spearing for them? they make a nice fillet.

If anyone lives it Atlanta area, the Chattahooche river is great Trout fishing. You can catch them with a jig, flies, and salmon egs just about anywhere off the shore, from a boat, on wading in the water. The best way to catch them is to find a still of calm water, perhaps next to a large rock, that still has flow but is slower then the water around it.(this is sometimes caused by current, but obstacles in the river can also create this effect) The trout hang out in these areas waing for minoows/food to flow by and you will have ebtter luck in those areas. They look like this
