i got a question about substrates i think...........yea substrates. this is gonna be my first time growing shrooms and im going to grwo B strain and either Thailand or Equador. and im going to use the MMGG Tek, but i dont think i can get ahld of brown rice flour, but i read somewhere on this site that Chex Whole Wheat cereal would work as a substitute for it...is this true?? and one more thing...if that is true can i use basicly anything "nutritional" as a substrate or will mushrooms only grow on certain things? please help me here, this is my first time and im kinda confused...thanx

get some brown rice flour or dark rye flour. i would bet almost without a doubt that if you went to the nearest 2 or 3 grocery stores to you that you will be able to find 1 of the 2 pretty easily. or get brown rice and grind teh shit up into powder. i just refuse to believe you cannoit get BRF; especially if youvce already located someplace to get vermiculite; thats the hard stuff to get.

Don't waste your money on brown rice flour. Go to your local grocery store and buy regular brown rice (Riceland brand if they have it), then just grind it up in a blender or coffee grinder. AFOAF does this and it works great. And is alot less expensive. Good luck! Mia :)

In my limited experience, I've used BRF/Verm...Whole Brown Rice and Verm...and a combo of above with birdseed...My Whole brown Rice jars colonized the fastest (due, in part, to the loose nature of the substrate)...My BRF jars were the slowest (due to the density of the substrate)...I'm expecting smaller yeilds from the Whole Brown Rice cakes, but they're already cased, and I'm still waiting on all the others...Hope that helps... Also... Spend the extra money on organic rice if you can get it...I trust it more...
