Weird headaches
    #4943698 -

I'm 20 years old, no family history of aneurysm that i'm aware of, not a bad diet, and relatively physically fit (gym and bike to school) but smoke cigs when drinking on the weekend...and that's pretty much the extent of the bodily harm I'm doing to myself.

So, I've been smoking marijuana pretty regularly for the past 5 months or so...and for the last month or two pretty much every day.  I'm adding this because I don't know if my headaches are from the weed or not...my thinking is that they aren't.

So, a couple months ago I got pretty quick onset headache and had to walk outside and get some clear breaths because I had a weird feeling that i was having a cerebral aneurysm or something.  Since then it happened to the same degree a few weeks later.

Now, i'm pretty freaked out because i was stoned last night and i started to get that feeling again.  it started as a dull but strong pain suddenly on the top right side of my head.  after a while it spread over the entire top of my head and to the upper back and left side and was throbbing and very uncomfortable.

I got scared and searched cerebral aneurysm on the internet to get symptoms, likelihood info, etc. and i had a couple symptoms.  the symptoms i had consistant w/ aneurysm were sudden and severe headache (i kept rubbing my head and tried to hold it together from bursting it was throbbing so bad).  i also had an uneasy stomach feeling that i might consider nausea but that probably had to do more with how scared i was that i was going to die.  the rest of the symptoms including pain behind eyes, dizzyness, blurred vision, vomiting, confusion, loss of consciousness, i did not have.

also, it is my understanding that once an aneurysm victim begins showing symptoms it is a pretty quick process from headache to loss of consciousness.  i was freaking out w/ the headache and nausea for 2 hours, then it started to get better over the next hour and was gone by the end of it (probably helped that i had a big drink to calm my nerves).

this morning i was relieved to wake up alive but i got the same headache feelings (though WAY milder) and uneasy stomach a couple hours after waking.  it disappeared much sooner than it had the night before but i've been feeling like i was going to get the headache again all day after that while attending classes and such...but i think that may be paranoia and pseudosyndromatic.

I KNOW YOU AREN'T ALL DOCTORS...

but i still have some questions i'd like you to answer if you can:

1.  do you think the marijuana has anything to do with what was happening to me or was it a coincidence that this happened while i was high and the marijuana made me freak out when it was only a simple headache?

2.  do you know anyone who has had an aneurysm and what was their age, did they survive, where was the headache localized, what's their story, etc.?

3.  are there pre-symptoms that would clue somebody in to their aneurysm before it actually bursts?

4.  anything besides aneurysm or pre-aneurysm that i might have been experienceing?

5.  anything you can add would be greatly appreciated.

I wrote a goodbye note to friends and family as a precaution last night, directing my roommates to my stash so they could get rid of it before my room was cleaned up.  I was so scared but i couldn't talk about my symptoms w/ my roommates for some reason.  the last thing i wanted to do was get rushed to the ER and get a catscan of my brain revealing nothing wrong at all, but i was conflicted because it seemed my only choice (either that or die).  i was sure i wouldn't see this morning last night and i'm paranoid even right now as i type his that something bad is going to happen and i'll die of this aneurysm that i'm probably pseudo feeling.

god.  i don't know what to do or think but i could sure use some help/guidance.  if a doctor's visit is DEFINETLY a must i can do that next week when i go home for thanksgiving and visit my primary caregiver.  thanks

Well my first advice is to certainly go see a doctor about this!!!

From my knowledge of brain aneurysms (which, admittedly, is only basic - I'm not a doctor) it doesn't sound like that's what you have. I could be wrong, though, which is why you need to go see a doctor as soon as possible.

Check out this page for some basic info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerebral_aneurysm

From that page I see that survival rates for a ruptured cerebral aneurysm ranges from 10-70%. That's quite a range. Without you seeing a doctor there is NO way of knowing if this is an aneurysm or, if it is, how bad of one it is. Go see a doctor.

From that page you can also see that if you do have an aneurysm, you run a 4% risk per year of it rupturing.

Not to scare you, but personally I would be much more concerned about brain cancer than an aneurysm if I started getting unexplained headaches (especially if I didn't have a history of headaches). I recently lost a cousin to brain cancer. He had no idea that's what it could be, until he found out - at which point it was too late for him. It was inoperable at that point. They tried a few rounds of chemo, but from the start of his symptoms right to the end it was a steady slope downhill :frown:

As for marijuana...I get headaches sometimes after smoking it, though not very often. I never get headaches when I'm not smoking, though. Marijuana can increase your heart rate, but also usually lowers blood pressure though I'm sure some pressure increase is possible due to the increased heart rate. An increase in blood pressure could cause a headache - aneurysm or no.

Does your family have any history of heart-related problems? High blood pressure or cholesterol?

Does the pain change at all if you stand up, sit, or lay down?

IMPORTANTLY - have you been having any (non drug related) mental effects? Unusual lethargy, twitching, loss of feeling, or visual distortions?

You DEFINITELY want to go see a doc about this, man. It doesn't have to be an ER visit (unless you feel like it's just ruptured...in which case CALL 911!!!) but you should at least get out to a clinic or your family doctor to explain your symptoms.

Welcome to the wonderful world of migraines.

Going to the doctor is not a bad idea, just to be on the safe side, but from your description (Feeling funny followed by intense pain on one side of the head that radiates out in all directions and nausea) it sounds like a bad case of migraine. Mine started when I was 17, so you are about the right age to start getting them.

So, most probably, extremely annoying but not dangerous, but go see a doctor anyway.

Check out information on cluster headaches. You might be having those.

Ironically, one of the things that has been proven to get rid of cluster headaches is the occassional consumption of hallucinogenic mushrooms.

Could be as simple as eye strain combined with mj use. Perhaps you wear glasses and your right lens is playing catch-up, I don't know.

I got bad headaches once when I tried wearing headphones only on one ear so I could listen and respond to conversations. It didn't work for me.

(we know mj use alters the eye, I forget how, but that could effect vision and the compatibility of eye-glasses, resulting in strain and headache.)

I'd go see a doctor. Also, if you are in the habit of not drinking much water, and you drink diuretics like caffeine or alcohol, you may be chronically dehydrated. It can cause some pretty bad headaches.

MJ has given me headaches similar to those you describe when I take too much too fast. In any case, you should see a doctor about it.

See a doctor...

Beyond that, I have always found the smoking MJ makes any headache I have much, much worse.

thanks for all the help everybody...i REALLY appreciate the kind helping words you offer.

i researched migraine, cluster headache, cerebral aneurysm (wikipedia is pretty sweet  ) and i'm not sure my symptoms matched any of them.  i think i'll go to the doc and mention my symptoms and see what he has to say about it.  thanks all!!

btw.  i do get headaches if i smoke weed with a hangover or a pre-existing headache later on when the high wears down.  peace and love my friends...  :1up:

uhm, just so you know

the internet really isn't the best place to get medical advice.

you wouldn't believe how many patients come in telling us they have a certain disease because they found related symptoms on pubmed.

that's why i'm going to approach my doc   i felt a little silly posting this on the net but i feel like i got some good support so i'm cool w/ it.  i think i'll just tell the doctor i think i'm having migraines and it'll be migraines until he rules that out.
