I don't know, when the symbols did loose their meaning for things and stood only for vocals and consonants, but that happened of course, because you need much vewer symbols for much more words.

Taurus=cow/ox//beef/rind, as the turned over A shows.
The word in hebrew for cow = aleph... That is the name for the first letter of alphabeth as well (in hebrew), as the first letter (of the word aleph) is a sounding aaaa
Later the greeks made alpha out of it, then the romans made our known A...
