President Bush: We do not torture.

Today Bush gave a speech about US interrogation in Panama. One thing that I noticed which is quite obvious is this: Bush stated that "we do not torture". But for some reason, the legislation that is going through the senate to ban torture is coming upon opposition from the vice president. He wants the law to exempt the CIA from the banning of torture.

Now why on earth would we want to have an exemption to this law if we don't torture anyone? If there is no torture going on as Bush stated, why have an exemption for the CIA? That totally and clearly shows that Bush is a lying bastard. I don't understand how this could be so obvious but nobody even say anything. Your thoughts?

doesnt matter wut the law says, the CIA will always torture ppl. when u need info, u need info. and sometimes theres no other way but torture

I can totally understand why they torture people, but it just pisses me off that Bush would blatantly lie to the public like that (not like it's the first time he's done so). I really don't think that the CIA should be an exception to this law though. If it's enacted, it should be for all branches.

still like iv said before, its not really him speaking. hes just the voice of america, its the CIA and shit that tells him wut to say. hes not the one really in charge of this country. no one can be in office for 4 to 8 years and know all the secrets and shit of the USA and really know how to protect it, and make all the decisions. thats y we have generals, to make all the decisions for him, he just has to sign a paper and they can do w/e they want

I figured that we did. It just shocked me that he can lie about something so widely known and get away with it. Normally when he lies about stuff, it's not something that is just common sense. It takes a little bit of research.

The whole thing bugs the shit out of me. Clinton lies about cheating on his wife when there are cameras and microphones in his face (which anybody would've done if the media was asking them the same question), The republicans flip the fuck out and want him impeached. Bush lies about WMDs to the public and NOTHING happens (and to make matters worse the republicans bitch when the senate closes in an attempt to call him out on it), no impeachment, not a word. I for one feel that presidents, and presidential candidates should be forced to take a voice modulation polygraph any time they address the public (inaugurations, presidential debates and press conferences). In fact all politicians should be required to do this. At least when Clinton lied nobody died.

Yeah, but I do agree there are times when people withholding critical info should have it tortured out of em'. But it isn't always effective, and sometimes it kills em' which can defeat the point of torture in the first place.

The only reason we should not torture people is because it is ineffective. The fear of torture is much more likely to get info out of people than actual torture.

I have to say i disagree. I believe that torture is very effective but it can be inhumane to an extent . There are types of torture that are effective that aren't inhumane. I think we (or any country) should be allowed to use it if there is critical information needed. But we all know that sooner or later it will get out of hand (if it hasnt already). I think the most effective type of torture that isn't too bad would have to be sleep deprivation.

how exactly is torture effective? People will say anything to make the torture stop - mostly just lies and bogus info. Torture is simply unreliable...

Just because they say anything to stop to torture doesn't always mean it's not true.

The thing is, they can torture a person into telling them something, and then when they check to see if it's true or not and it's NOT, they can continue with the torture. Who says the second they get the answer they are going to let the person run free? They could keep the person to make sure they didn't lie and resume torture when (if) he/she does. The person will give it up sooner or later. You know it, too.

Yeah, I was just thinking the same thing. They could say "I'll be back to torture you twice as hard if this information isn't true." That would work.

But this is a sad day for America. The fact that our leaders are comfortable with lowering our standards like this is just sad. This is the type of thing we accuse Saddam of. Hell, we'll probably have rape rooms pretty soon if we don't already.
