Magic mushroom man flies to his death [IRL]

A Halloween partygoer who had taken magic mushrooms leapt to his death convinced he could fly. The 33-year-old mans girlfriend watched in horror as he plunged 40ft from the balcony of a plush apartment. Last night there were calls for a ban on the magic mushrooms - bought LEGALLY at a herbal shop in Dublin. Witnesses at the party in Dun Laoighaire on Sunday night told how the man had started acting strangely. One guest said "He suddenly jumped up ran on to a balcony and flew straight into the air". Cops believe the man started hallucinating after eating the mushrooms. He jumped from the fourth story of a five-storey building. The witness added " These mushrooms are deadly. This young man began acting weirdly."
"The stuff he took has similar effect to LSD-its hallucinogenic. He obviously thought he could fly. He bought the mushrooms in a herbal shop and they ended up killing him." Gardai yesterday cordoned off the area at upmarket Anchorage Apartments in Clarence St. Dun Laoghaire. Detectives from the national drug unit fear Ireland could be swamped with magic mushrooms - which are banned in the UK. A legal loophole means the Dutch produced fungus is legal here. One top cop last night told the Sun "We could have an epidemic on our hands unless this problem is sorted out." Senior officer plan to hold emergency talks with Justice minister McDowell today to discuss closing the loophole.

Gee... why not educate people rather than banning a substance. If a ban is needed, it should be a ban on selling mushrooms to uneducated morons. (Anybody that puts a mind altering substance into their body without first researching the substance is a moron in my book!)

nevermind the hundreds of thousands of successful trips, but as soon as one psychotic individual releases his sickness with a psychedelic and offs himself in a blaze of psychedelic glory, all of a sudden it's the psychedelic's fault. Mushrooms aren't suicidal, people are.

Yeah obviously. for fucks sake, I bet he was drunk stupid. Meant to be a huge proportion of suicides done while drunk, nobody calls for alcohol to be banned for this reason.
I was counting the days until this fucking shit would happen, and the gutter press jump on it like vultures. I was mentioning it on an irish forum, how it would be a good way for somebody to commit suicide so it seems like it is not suicide, (like people purposely crashing cars or having skydiving accidents) take shrooms, kill yourself, family rests easier thinking it was the drugs that did it.

There is no fucking loophole. This shit is mentioned on other irish forums too, as though every edible mushroom is called out by it latin name specifiying that it is legal. If it is not illegal, it is legal, end of story.

AFOAF lives in the same apartment block so I will get more real info on this story.

I hope the cops will be able to cope with this epidemic of people tossing themselves out windows.  :rolleyes:

Don't go blaming mushrooms on this guy. If he thought he could fly, why didn't he take off the ground first and check it out? You don't see ducks going up the elevator to fly south for the winter? They make it sound like it was beyond his control and that the mushrooms made him do it. Like everyone else pointed out, no one goes blaming alcohol when something similar happens. In fact, there are hundreds of hospital admissions for drunken falls every week. But you don't hear about those in the paper often, do you? No one seems to take responsibility for their actions anymore.

Someone whos dumb enough to jump out the window on shrooms was most likely dumb enough to do it sober too. The guy was obviously a disaster waiting to happen, id bed if he didnt jump out that window he woulda got drunk and jumped off a bridge some day anyway.

Blame the system, not the people. We lie to our children and teach them how dangerous cannabis, alcohol, and cigarettes are while holding a bottle of whiskey in one hand and a burning cigarette in the other. It only stands to reason that they don't believe any warnings after seeing how dangerous cannabis is, first hand. If we taught responsible use rather than spew and sue, perhaps this sort of thing wouldn't happen.

Some facts on this, according to the family:

He was drinking all night with his friends. 3 of his friends and himself decided to take some mushrooms; 4 others did not. 25 minutes after taking the mushrooms, he was vomitting violently, and 5 minutes later he jumped to his death.

Two points bear making here:
1. If you vomit, the mushrooms are gone. No more trip.

2. 25 minutes is a VERY short come up time.

We await the results of the inquest, but I confidently predict that the man will be found to have had virtually no psilocybin in his system when he died.

No more increase in the trip. If you are already tripping, emptying your belly does not stop the trip.

I have gone from zero to full peak in less than five minutes on ingested shrooms. It was an insane dosage (over 10g dry), ground up and mixed with liquid and drank quickly with no food. I remember setting the cup down and starting to clean the blender when I realized I was coming up way too quickly. I started for the bathroom and ended up having to crawl most of the way, it was that fast. It normally takes about forty minutes before I feel much of anything at all and a good hour before I am peaking. I suspect it was the dosage more than anything that led to the quick peak, in my case.

Another fact that seems to have been completely ignored is that the shop that he supposedly bought his mushrooms in had labels saying "do not mix with alcohol or other drugs" which he chose to ignore. If somebody ignores the "do not exceed recommended dose" warning on a box of Panadol and dies do you think it would be banned, of course not.
