Photographing mushrooms ?

Whats the best way to photo a mushroom so that it can be later identified ? Is there a set way that a professional might do it.

You might wnat to take multiple photo's, such as under the cap to see the gill pattern, and also a photo of the top and maybe a size comparrasion(SP) .

First get a shot of the cap!

Then get a shot at the gills!

Then get a shot of the stem!

Habitat shots will also help with an ID..

One thing I have been doing recently is taking a cross-section of the gills. Often the spore color is evident in the photo and not to the naked eye. (If you are like me, you sometimes don't get a print made despite all good intentions.) Also rip the stalk lengthwise and you can see if it is hollow or what kind of core it has which can help ids too.

The habitat shot is important also, though not necessarily required.. Try some pics from different angles out in habitat, once you are back to the computer, you can select from the best of those.. best to take a number of photos in case some don't come out right. It gives the reader more of feel for how and where they grow.
Picked specimens are best photographed somewhere that is well lit, like outside during daylight hours. If you have a good flash, that also helps for indoor pics.

I'd say most importantly, if your camera has a macro mode, USE it.
