It is not about how Vernon or I label you, but about personal discomfort because of another's opinion of you. If their ideas can make you happy or sad then you are not centered and may allow another to 'cause' one pain.

It has nothing to do with being social. Do you want to be pushed and pulled by the moods of others? Should your happiness be dependent on whether or not someone (who themsleves is uncentered) likes or dislikes you today?

Or would you rather break free and discover a new way of living?

i believe how a person feels, and how they choose to act, are not necessarily correlated. people often choose to act against their feelings.

if i have no food in my belly, how can i help but grow hungry?
life devoid of affection must be full of the pain of that missed affection.

the interdependant nature of human beings works as long as people are mutually affectionate; in such a case no new way of living would be necessary.

and when a person experiences the pain of lack of affection, i think it happens for a reason. emotional pain is signal to one's heart that something is wrong, just as hunger is a signal to the belly. if people experienced no pain, they wouldn't know when there's a problem. evolution gives us our feelings to give us helpful information about our relationships with our environments.

in a way, i don't believe "a new way of living" is possible, since i don't think there's any choice in the matter, when it comes to feelings. but perhaps a new way of living can be found if a person changes their environment, and in that way indirectly change the emotions they're experiencing.

The educational model in the United States is designed to maintain a state in which "your happiness [is] dependent on whether or not someone (who themselves is uncentered) likes or dislikes you today", and so not only produces mass quantities of "sheep", but ensures that those of a more predatory nature go unchecked.

To carry the symbolism a little farther; we live in an age where the modest wolves are growing rare and the rabid sheep a growing rampant.

What are you suggesting?

That is the crux of much of Howard's teachings.

Why does a salesman say, "Hey, you look great today?" To manipulate your mood. Well, EVERYBODY is selling something.

Why does another person say, "Hey, you look like shit today?" Because they are trying to suck your power.

When you can truly see the games that people play, you become immune (not hard-hearted) to their manouverings. This has nothing to do with genunine affection. It has to do with awareness and in seeing the falseness of others.

And in ourselves, as well.  Once you begin "unplugging" from the emotional manipulations of those around you, the methods YOU are using to get your way become all too obvious, and uncomfortable. :blush:

In my experience, freeing my attention from robotic responses to others left me with nowhere to look but inside.  Despite my strong commitment to personal growth, it is challenging to maintain this focus.  The temptation to look at and criticize the faults and failings of others is still present.

The dichotomy here is not between sheep and wolf, but between sheep and shepherd.

To some extent I agree with you. Motive is important.

But, can't that salesman truly be honestly telling you you look great today? And mean it? I don't mean you personally of course but someone who truly did look great that day? I mean what if some hottie woman model walked in to buy a car. Should the male salesman be honest and say "You look great today!" even if he means it? Maybe, maybe not. Motives = make a sale, get laid/flirt if faithfully married, be politically correct/make a sale/get laid even if different political persuasions.
