separate sterilization
    #482573 - 12/06/01 11:06 PM (22 years, 7 days ago)

I've been reading a lot about microwave sterilization and I'd really like to try it since it would be easiest. But, most people don't use the microwave because they say it dries out the substrate too much. So I was wondering if it would be alright to sterilize dry substrate separate from water in the microwave. Then, after they are both sterile just add the water to the substrate. I was thinking about sterilizing the water in some syringes then just injecting it into the substrate.
I thought this sounded like a pretty good idea and you definitely wouldn't have to worry about drying out the substrate in the microwave, but i am pretty new at this. Hit me back with any comments on this idea.

I think you'd have to put a little water in before... I know w/ BRF and Verm When I'm mixing them in the bowl before I add water it's impossible to get them mixed b/c the brf just sifts through the verm to the bottom of the bowl.. If you put it in the jar w/ no water you might just end up w/ a big fat layer of verm and the brf at teh bottom...

why don't you mix the water in before putting it in there. microwave it. then weigh it with a digi. and next time account for the water loss when mixing
