Wierd experience after waking up from REM sleep
    #4776745 -

I went to sleep at about 11:40pm or so, then I had some very vivid dreams and I woke up at 12:15am (about 30 minutes later) and heres the wierd thing, after I woke up all over my ceiling and wall I saw strange blue coloured words swirling around with some blue swirling lines too. It was a full hallucination
.
I know I wasn't still dreaming, being able to read my electronic clock proves that. Has anyone else had an experience like this when you awoke from a dream then began to hallucinate?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis

"The disorder known as "sleep paralysis" occurs when the brain is awakened from a REM state into essentially a normal fully awake state, but the bodily paralysis is still occurring. This causes the person to be fully aware, but unable to move. In addition, this state is usually accompanied by certain specific kinds of hallucinations. This state usually lasts no more than two minutes before a person is able to either return to full REM sleep or to become fully awake, though the sense of how much time has gone by is often distorted during sleep paralysis. People who are fortunate enough to be facing a clock while having an episode may often be surprised to see how little time has gone by during an episode that seems to last a very long time."

This sounds like what you may have experienced. I have experienced sleep paralysis on several different occasions (not sure why). The first few times it was extremely frightening because I had no idea what was happening, never having heard of this state before. It has since occured a few more times and I have actually found it to be rather interesting, being able to identify the symptoms immediately.

I wasn't in paralysis though, I had full body control, thats how I was able to get up and look at the clock. I'm guessing I was hallucinating for about a minute before I decided to go back to sleep.

These are hypnopompic hallucinations, which can happen when you are first waking up. I get them sometimes, too. For me there are usually dots swirling or flying around or sometimes it'll look like the walls are morphing and melting.

of course you can, but the time generally is not accurate... and regardless of whether or not you can read it, it is not going to be a STABLE time.... unless you look, it says 1:47, you run around your room doing crazy things while thinking "it's 1:47, it's 1:47, it's 1:47" and making a big deal about remembering the time....... otherwise when you look at it again it'll probably say something else.

it just depends on how much you are focused on time... if you're trying to wake up because you think you're late for school you're going to look at the clock in your dreams and it might very well keep having a consitant time, since you expect that you are late for school and you fixate really badly on it.

............ incidentally knowing that you should be awake, that you are probably awake for something, and not being able to do anything about it other than suffer through a near entire REMs worth of paralyze is the oddest and most unpleasant thing ever!!! I mean it's way more than just normal sleep paralysis which you can get out of... I've had it maybe half a dozen times total in my entire life...

it would be an excellent time to lucid dream but it seems to only arise when you STRONGLY DESIRE TO WAKE UP, in the first place, supreceding any desire to lucid dream.

I had sleep paralaysis once . my boyfriend was in my dream and he was a midget dressed in all black and i woke becuase the vibe he was giving was not good. when i woke up i could not move my body or see anything or call for my boyfriend who was asleep on the other couch . It was scary at the time but now i see it as a really kool experience. My boyfriends says it can be related to an out of body experience.

if yuor not setting a good example you can at least be an early warning.
