injuries up by 60%

The number of injuries to people on elevators and escalators has increased by 60 percent since the state began privatizing their inspections, a newspaper reported on Monday.

State officials said the number of elevators and escalators has also jumped, too, however, accounting for part of the increase.

The state completed a shift to private inspectors in 2002, a move seen as good because it greatly increased the number of people available to do the inspections, from 28 staff inspectors before privatization to more than 200 certified private inspectors after.

The increased number of inspectors decreased the backlog in elevators and escalator inspections by 70 percent, but a backlog remains, with nearly a third of the state's 43,000-odd elevators and escalators showing no proof they've been inspected and certified annually, as the law requires, the Tallahassee Democrat reported Monday.

The number of accidents involving injuries went from 320 in fiscal year 2000-2001, the full year before privatization, to 515 in the 2004-2005 fiscal year that ended June 30, the newspaper reported.

there aren't nearly enough data in that article to reach any sort of conclusion regarding how privatizing elevator inspections in florida has impacted public safety, let alone make any sort of statement regarding privatization in general.

meh.

ill oversimplify the hell outa this one for you:

first off,
when the gov says they are privatizing things, they are not privatizing, they are usually just going to a type of charter system. when most government fucntions are "privatized", it simply means that the gov. lets the lowest bidder win the contract to do the work. and no surprise, you end up with shitty slow workers.

true privitization is ELIMINATION of a function of government. letting the market actually decide if something should exist.

so when talking about the elevator thing, think of it like this...

elevator manufacturers have an interest to make safe products, so they can sell more. (if they sall dangerous ones, no one will buy their product)

well here comes the old we know best mafia. (thats the gov't, btw). "pay our inspectors to make sure your product is safe", they say.

"well i WAS going to buy some stronger cables for my elevator, but i can't afford them now, thanks to having to pay for your inspectors!", says the manufacturer.

"oh, whats that? i can pass inspection if i give you 20 extra dollars? and because i was inspected by you i wont be personally liable when my product kills people. OK! sounds great to me!"

so it ends up that no one is responsible for themselves anymore, beause the government tells people that THEY will be responsible. well we all know that the government isnt held accountable to anyone for anything. so the elevator manufacturer is off the hook, and probably happy that he got to save money on the thicker cable, and on top of that, he gets to install a new elevator now. so he votes for more government regulation so he can further fuck over people, and the cycle continues. the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. that is, until the next revolution, of course.
