Bush slams door on U.N. inspectors
Coalition takes on `responsibility for dismantling Iraq'

France calls for lifting of sanctions affecting civilians

WASHINGTON?The Bush administration yesterday barred U.N. weapons inspectors from returning to Iraq to search for suspected weapons of mass destruction, declaring that U.S.-British forces alone would conduct the hunt without U.N. help.

White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer told reporters: "Make no mistake about it ? the United States and the coalition have taken on the responsibility for dismantling Iraq's (weapons of mass destruction). We know they exist, and we're confident that they will be found.''

U.S. Ambassador John Negroponte told reporters at U.N. headquarters in New York that the United States and Britain had "assumed responsibility for disarming Iraq," adding, "for the time being, and for the foreseeable future, we visualize that as being a coalition activity.''

The officials outlined Bush administration policy shortly after chief U.N. weapons inspector Hans Blix urged the U.N. Security Council to send weapons inspectors back to Iraq. The U.N.-sponsored weapons' search was suspended shortly before the U.S. launched military operations in Iraq on March 19.

Asked if the White House saw a role for U.N. inspection teams in a postwar Iraq, Fleischer responded: "The president is looking forward, not backward."

The Security Council voted in 1990 to require U.N. inspectors to certify that Iraq was free of weapons of mass destruction before lifting economic sanctions imposed in response to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait.

The U.S. has urged an immediate end to those sanctions. Yesterday, France ventured a compromise, urging the Security Council to immediately suspend economic sanctions that targeted Iraqi civilians. But Russian Ambassador Sergey Lavrov balked, saying he wanted to await a weapons-free certification by U.N. inspectors.

Blix told BBC radio in an interview broadcast yesterday that the U.S. and Britain had used "shaky" intelligence including forged documents to bolster contentions that Iraq possessed outlawed weapons.

He called it "very, very disturbing" that U.S. officials had claimed that Iraq tried to buy uranium for possible nuclear weapons from the West African nation of Niger when the key document detailing the alleged transaction was "more than shaky ? it was a fake.''

So, its wrong for Saddam to bar UN inspectors? But for the Bush its ok? hmm.

Even so, its hypocritical how Bush pushes for war because Iraq wont comply with UN inspectors, and now Bush is complying less.

Bush is not the one who signed an agreement letting inspectors in as a condition of the Kuwaiti cease-fire. Apples and Oranges.

Since the UN was too spineless to deal with Saddam, they should have ZERO say in what happens there now.

The UN has grown toothless.

I think just for their own sake they should allow the UN weapons inspectors...so if something IS found it will be by a third party...therefore not giving the U.S. a chance to "plant" anything.

Or for people to say the US planted it although I'm sure they would anyway.

I agree.

The U.S. reasoning behind not allowing the UN inspect for weapons is a little dubious.

I really think that we aren't allowing UN inspectors in just to spite them. It does seem a little childish.

Cool. I'm glad he did. Hans Blix couldn't find his dick with a map.

Doesn't make alot of sense to me, they could find the weapons faster with more inspectors, plus they would lend credibility.

No, they could find the weapons faster with more competent inspectors.

A LITTLE dubious?

Bush shamelessly uses UN resolutions as a justification for war and then when the UN wants to continue the job of finding the weapons that were the pretext for the war in the first place, he tells the UN to fuck off. What, out of spite? He's only spiting his nose to hurt his face, because any "discoveries" that are not verified by a third party will be completely suspicious.

There is only one trustworthy form of verification, and that is through a third party. The only third party with the capacity and the resources to carry out a trustworthy verification of the presence of WMD is the UN.

Anyone who doesn't understand this is a fucking jackass, totally ignorant of even the most basic principles of law and logic. The level of stupidity on this thread is absolutely mindblowing.

This is a mistake, in my opinion.

I can't see what harm allowing third-party inspectors into Iraq would do.
If the UN would feel better about being part of the search, let 'em in, I say.

Once again, the Bush administration demonstrates a lack of foresight and an uncanny ability to increase mistrust of the U.S. among all nations of the world. I can at least take comfort in the fact that I did not vote for the imbecile.
