Has anyone grown morels?

I would like to look into growing some morels but have found little information on the subject.  Has anyone done this indoors and if so can you provide me with the type of substrate and/or environmental conditions needed?  A link to a grow guide would be just dandy.

Also, if you know where I might find a syringe or culture that would be most helpful

Q. Have they figured out to grow morels indoors? A. Yes, and I plan a complete column on that subject soon so I won't go into great detail here. Dr. Ron Ower discover the process in the early 1980's. The technology was further developed and patented by Neogen Corporation. In the latter part of that decade and the beginning of the 90's, Dominoes Pizza became involved and constructed the first year-round morel farm in Mason, Michigan. By 1992, the new venture, named Morel Mountain was producing 500 pounds per week indoors year-round! The patent was then sold to Terry Farms and a new facility was constructed in Auburn, Alabama. It is my understanding that they are growing 5000 pounds per week.

FWIU, many have copied the techniches outlined in the patent and failed meaning either Terry Farms has a blessed green thumb or some detail was intentionally left out of the patent.

I have red those patents many times over.... And I feel they leave a few k3y steps. I copied the patent to the baest with no evail, I have tried my own experiments as well. I have grown out full trays of substrate and have yet been able to form knots/pins.


Debia if you could help me out, it be much apreciated.

i've read about outdoor fruitings with substrate that was sterilized by lighting it on fire after pouring gasoline over it, keep in mind it could take quite a while to see fruiting

Tried finding any contact info about terry farms in Auburn, AL and nothing. Did manage to track some info about the parent company called Zellwood farms in Zellwood FL, but the last info from Feb 1997 says that A. Duda & Sons will close out the FL property which own the Terry farms in Auburn, AL.
But did finally find a Terry farms in FL, but don't think they grow Morels, something called bahiagrass (sp);

So basically I think the US Morel farm is no more, which goes along with all my research on Terry farms being old by at least 2+ years, so either it was not profitable enough or bad times hit them a couple of years ago.

Terry Farms was sold to Monterey Mushrooms that runs the Zellwood plant here in FL. I called them a few years back and spoke to the head grower. He didn't give me too much information as to why they weren't growing the morels anymore, but he did say that that operation was no longer running.
The morel operation was and is extremely interesting. It represents an enigma within the mushroom community, and I'm fascinated by it. Ron Ower developed the means for successful indoor cultivation of morels. He patented the invention, with the forsight to cloak the real method in secrecy by patenting an incomplete or incorrect method. No one who as tried to follow the patent has succeeded in producing the fruitbodies.
Neogen Corporation bought the patent and I believe helped scale up the process to commercial viability. There was interest and money coming from Campbell's Soup and Money's Mushrooms, but I can't recall the exact dynamics of the situation right now. Neogen has ignored calls and e-mails regarding information on Morel Cultivation.
Shortly after Ron Ower patented the process, has was murdered, sending him to the grave with the real methods of the cultivation still secret from all but a very few. This makes it like a murder mystery , adding to the intrigue.
The reason they've stopped producing them is that they were going through serious strain degradation with their commercial cultures, and they had the problem that the cultivated morels - they didn't taste as good as natural ones.
I've gotta run to work now, but I've got a lot more info. There's a new patent that looks interesting I'll discuss it later.

Does anyone know what sort of legal problems the patent would create for a person trying to produce morels commercially? What about outside of the US? How significant would the procedure described in the patent not actually working be?

Israeli Morel farm might still be in operation. If they are they are using a different method that supposedly improves the flavour.

As far as Patent law is concerned, all I can tell you is that the last US patent was from 1988 (original 1986), but could not find an expiration date for those patents.

However since it has pretty much been accepted that the patent is incomplete, one can argue to the patent office that it is a faulty patent that does not work. This of course assumes you can grow morels from your own procedures to show them your tek works and the other does not.

As for the last question as best as I can make it out what you are asking. If the patent does not work in 1 step it does not work overall. Simply put the part that is missing may be a simple step (refrigeration) or a more complex procedure that is being kept secret right now. More of an art to morel growing than a science right now, not to mention aside from truffles I think Morels are the most expensive right now so everyone is trying to come up with any way to make $$ in this economy.
