shiitake culture on logs, starts white then turns brown
    #4746647 -

Hi!

I have had success growing shiitake from sawdust blocks, and I'm now learning how to grow shiitake from plugs in logs.

The issue is that the culture will be white are grow for a few days, and then it starts to turn brown.  I've soaked the logs for 24hrs (well-tap water), and fridged them for 24hrs, and I mist them with well-tap water once a day.

I am figuring the solution is humidity-related?  Any ideas what is a possible fix?

THANKS
JJ

edit:  I figured it out...  With the sawdust blocks, I was used to seeing flushes within a couple weeks.  I didn't know that a log with spawn plugs can take many months :smirk:

I've seen similar occurances from a friends grow on PF cakes with Shitake's. His turned brown as well, but when the temps lowered they fruited nicely. Mid 60's and lower RH's is what worked good for him.....

Correct. Every Shiitake block or log I've grown has turned brown in places.

thanks

yeah, on these logs, so far ALL of the white turns brown.

more humidity/spraying does seem to help.
I'll lower the temp also and see how it affect things..

There are finally a few bumps of white, so hopefully they'll keep growing..

my plug spawn started turning brown (barking over) after leaving it in my fridge for some time, never even opened the bag. But it still worked for inoculating supplemented sawdust blocks and I got fruits. I did try to use the plugs that had the least amount of brown on them

If it's not broken, then the government will try to fix it until it is.
