And you call yourself a nerd? :smirk:

1989? Back then the Internet was only available to universities, government institutions, companies involved in research, and network providers. But if you're counting all multi-user networks, then my start date would be 1987 when I joined QuantumLink, many years before they changed their name to AOL and joined the Internet. I was 11 or 12 at the time. Since then the computer has been my social outlet.

That's the one. :smirk:  Cause I remember all of a sudden our provider switched to being AOL.

I just very definitely remember being on GEnie (if you don't count that as the internet, well, I dunno) in 89-90.

Search for "1989" in that essay and keep going to next, eventually you'll hit passages about how the internet was commercially available in 1989, and the World Wide Web became available in 1990.

I started getting on the internet back around 1996 when I was a junior in high school. I went to a very small school, but we got a fairly large technological grant from somewhere or another, so we were blessed with a state of the art computer lab complete with a T-1 line.

I mostly fucked around in this ichat chat room called Open24 when things got slow during Mass Media class. During my senior year, I was editor of the yearbook so I was allowed to take the class laptop home with me on the weekends. My uncle had a dialup account so he let me use it to dialup to the only local ISP.

After I graduated, I used my uncle's computer sporadically, and then when I went off to college in the fall of 97 I took some of the extra money I had and bought a computer. It was a packard bell with a 233mhz pentium/w mmx and 64 whole mb of ram. And a 2 gig hard drive! LOLZERZ! I was totally clueless. :smirk: I spent my time reading Mr. T Ate My Balls and other similarly pointless websites and downloading mp3's on UnderNet.

Then I discovered the computer game, The Sims. WOW, did I get addicted to that game, and I was glued to my computer for the next couple years. Then I found this place, and well, now I'm telling this story, and now its over. Whew! I didn't intend to go through all that, but once I got started I just couldn't stop. Sorry about the lame ending!

In High School I had an Apple IIe. Learned to work comfortably in Basic and Pascal. Abot the time the first Macintosh hit the scene (1984?) I was losing interest and I sold my Apple IIe in 85 or 86.

I didn't touch a computer again until 1996 when I bought a new IBM Aptiva. Paid $2000 for a system with a Pentium 110, 8 megs of ram, a 1 gig hard drive, and a 14.4kbps modem. Spent the next year teaching myself the ins and outs of computers all over again. Learned to work comfortably in DOS and build/rebuild my own systems. That was the year I first got on the internet.

....so the short answer is...about 9 years.

I remember playing the game "Tribes" on my dial-up account, back in '98. I would play that game for literally 12 hours at a time in the summer.

One of my favorite online games ever.

I remember when I was way young and Wow! just came out, or at least in our area, and we switched over to that, I used to love it, it was so cool. Then they left :frown:, that's my first real recollection of using the internet but I remember we had it before then.

Actually, I voted 6-9 years, but that's wrong, I know I used the internet before StarCraft came out and I also remember trying to play WarCraft 2 with my friends online, but we were too young and stupid to figure out how to do it.

My earliest memories of the internet are from when I was about 12. So it's been about 12 years for me.
