I'm not sure, I haven't done this and I can only tell you what I have read, but from what I understand if the perlite is really wet its bad for your cakes to leave them on it constantly, but in between flushes or if you cakes seem to be drying out you can leave them on the perlite for a while to rehydrate them.

I did this to my cakes for a while (2 days). The bottom of the cakes got a little soggy and the shrooms tended to be very wet, especially on top of the caps (and a lot harder to dry out when picked).

As TeRzMaStA said, you only need to do it inbetween flushes or if your cakes seem dry. Otherwise there's really point, as it just makes the cakes too wet.

Mine are sitting directly on the perlite.....
Second flush just starting and everything is looking pretty good. The cakes aren't soggy at all..... yet.

Don't oversaturate the perlite.....

It's ok to put it on Perlite.... just I would recommend it like this, take some vermiculite, get it really wet, and sterilize it either by microwaving or pressure cooking or boiling.

Take the wet vermic, and place a little "launch pad" for each cake out of the wet vermic. Kinda place little burgers just so the cakes can stand on them.

The cakes will eventually grow into the vermiculite and will have a very good source of water.

Only place the cakes directly on the perlite if you want big mushrooms
