couple more questions
    #442169 - 10/30/01 04:43 PM (22 years, 1 month ago)

iv been reading up on this perlite technique and it says you dont need a Humidifire? just put a 2 inch laywer on the bottom, poor 1/2 of water on the bottom and it shoudl keep the humidity levels at around 90, when the get low, just add a bit more water, and also take the lid off and ventalate the terrarium like once a day? and also not to keep the cakes directly on the perlite, have the cakes sit on the jar lids, or somthing else to keep it off the perlite so it dosent get waterloged....

is this the bets technique for a newbie? if so im thinkin ill take back my 100 bucks i spent on a humidifire and get a nice glass terrarium with that money.

Darren

I've got my cakes sitting directly on the perlite, and have at least 60 pins happening from five cakes so far. However, I didn't have a half inch of water in my perlite, it was just wetted (with h2o2/h2o) and then layed in two inches deep, and sprayed at least thrice daily with h2o2/h2o mist, so the chances of them being waterlogged are a lot lower.

Each to their own. I think I'll start a poll on it actually.

I use normal tap water in the substrate, as it's gonna be sterilsed in the PC anyway.
Wetting the perlite, use a mix of hydrogen peroxide and water (1 part hydrogen peroxide to 10 parts water). That's the h202/h2o mix I was talking about.
It's just strong enough to help kill off contams without being damaging to your mycelia.
h2o2 is as cheap as shit and can be bought from any drug store/chemist.

ok so, i get the perlite in thier, wet it with the mixture, and put a himidity guage in their, spray when its below 90, ventalate when its above 95

get a wire mesh to keep it off the perlite.

gotcha

the only thing is i have school all day and work at night, so on most days i can attend to is once at 7 in the mornin and agan after 10 at night

hope this will be ok....

im getting a clear plastic continer for my terrarium, im going to run the tests while my cakes are colonizing to practis keepin it at the right temp and humidity.

thanks again!
Darren

If it's the best you can do, it's the best you can do! Just make sure they are thorough air exchanges!

I think you'll be fine!
