My city searches through people's garbage

In my state it is perfectly legal for your garbage to be taken without a warrant. If they find something illegal in there or if a dog gets a "hit" on it then the cops can get a warrant to search your house.

There is mandatory recycling in my city. You have to seperate bottles, plastic, etc.. from normal trash. There are compliance officers who go through people's trash to make sure you are recycling. My mom got fined a few months ago for putting a few bottles in with the normal garbage.

Does anybody else find this weird? My mom's trash is being picked through by people. You can damn well bet that these guys are trained to look for "drug" stuff like empty hydroponic solution bottles, bags with weird residue, and marijuana looking stems and seeds.

Is this still America?

That sounds like BS to me. Who says that someone didn't throw something in your trash walking by once you put it next to the street? Do you live in Cali?

Where I live, 6 or 8 feet from the curb is town property and not even yours anyway, so I think that's where the legal loophole lies. Once it crosses that line it's fair game.

Thats pretty ridiculous. There was a ruling here, Indiana, a few months ago that its illegal to search through someone elses trash without a warrant.

Nope, I live in Pennsylvania.

I have heard of some horror stories out of California. I read one report of a house that had a very high electricity bill. The cops got suspicious (they thought she was running a marijuana grow) and they took a dog to this woman's garbage. The dog "got a hit" even though they could find no actual evidence in the garbage.

That was enough to get a warrant. They busted into her house and found that she was a mother who had three kids. The kids all had TV's in their rooms and she was constantly doing laundry and dishes. That's why her electricity bill was so high.

I hope she sued those fucking cops.

Do they search it before they put it in the truck or after it gets to the plant? If after how can they tell who's it is? Next youll need to put your name and adress on the trash bags. Thats fucked.

My garbage can is hoisted up in the air by a machine, and dumped over into the truck with no human interaction. I mix recyclabes occasianally (butt cups, nasty bottles of stuff) I've never had a problem
