Water damage on cakes and its effects on fruiting
    #464388 - 11/20/01 10:08 AM (22 years, 4 months ago)

AFOAF is noticing yellowing spots on his cakes and was wondering what if any effects this has on them after birthing and during the fruiting cycle , at first he though it was possibly greem contam just w/o reaching its green spectrum , but no greening yet , on the yellow spots will fruits still yeild , will a new layer of myc cover these , or will the myc structure repair itself and go back to a nice white color , any info would be verry helpfull , thx 4 your time, peace

i accidentally dumped a glass of water on one of my cakes and it fruited just fine. i couldn't get the water off of the top of the cake so i sprinkled some verm on it to soak it up. I don't know if this was a very good idea though. three days after that it started fruiting around the verm particles. I think that the cakes can take alot of abuse and keep on truckin.

dont worry, its just mycelium excretion...its typical (if of course there is no odor)
when you birth your jars, dab them off with a clean napkin.
good luck!

wait, just re-red your post...was that a yellow-ish colored tinge of the mycelium?

if so, your cake is drying out...did you measure accordingly?

yes its yellowish but its only here and there like verry small little dots , afoaf followed the mmgg and pftek exactly step by step , he dont think its due to dehydration seeing as the jar with the yellowing has a verry small pool colected at the bottom , also notced on some other jars at the verry bottom , the water ratio was i think 1/4 cup by mmgg standard but the inner resivour tek was also applied i think that combo resulted in excess water per cake . let me know what you think. thx for the verry helpfull info so far and thx to all readers and posters. peace yo.

yes but in the aeras where water has colllected it really slows the myc growth allmost to a stand still. what effects would it have if he turned the jars upside down ?

are those yellow spots more suspectable to contams and will they turn into contams if not dabbed off?

lol...i thought you had already did that...
take your jars, remove the tape covering the holes (assuming the jars are at least 50% colonized), and place the jar upside down so nothing falls thru the little holes..place your jars away from any source of drafts.
hopefully if all goes well, the verm barrier will sop up all the excess moisture while the holes will let your cakes breath (air exchange)

possibly...(too much moisture is bad)

if your jars are fully colonized, open them up and dob them off.
if your jars arent fully colonized, flip the jars like i said above and hope it works...
...but all in all, i think you are o.k...just a lil paranoid of failure?

dont worry, it happens to the best of us....everyone gets contams. unfortunately, its a part of the hobby.

That's ok! I think this happens because of too much water... I have just birthed 2 cakes with little yellow spots like you say on the bottom of it. I think everything will be ok since the spots are not too big!! GOOD LUCK!! Take care!

By inverting the jars what direction will that tell the mycelum to grow if its allready surface covered ?
will it continue to grow/move inwards towards the center ?
for jars not surface covered with mycelum will that inhibit or promote a different direction of growth besides the way its allready ben working ?
should the jar rings be retightened or left unscrewed?
Thx for any and all helpfull information . Long live the shroomery. peace.

The mycelium will grow towards any uncolonized food source, by inverting the jar you allow any excess moisture that settled there to drain away providing a more inviting area to grow into.

yes.
should the lids be left cracked or resealed?
if you innoculated with holes in your lids, remove the tape that covers the holes and place the jar upside down.
if you didnt innoc. with holes in your lid, than just keep your lids cracked.
