Over Dry cakes poor fruiter, help

Hi guys
Somewhere along the line I got the idea that using a heating pad would help speed colonization along nicely. Well, I'm not quite sure it helped much becuase in the end the cakes are performing very poorly.
What happened is the top 3/4" of each cake got pretty dry and therefore colonized at a snails pace. When I birthed the cakes, I found 1/2 of the outside of each cake to be dry and hard, with bluing in several places. Half the cakes, when birthed, still had some uncolonized substrate that didn't get infected but never really colonized much.
All these cakes have produced for my friend is loads of aborts with only a few viable fruit. The spores are Thailand Lipa Yai and Equador. The Lipas fruit with several fatass pins, while the EQs usually abort pretty quickly.
My question is: Is this to be expected? Should my buddy just start over and leave the heating pad out of the equation?
Thanks
Grover

The heating pad you speak of was the problem, possibly along w/ lack of water in your substrate. When you use a heating pad, you have to keep a real close eye on them. I use a pad from a pet store. The temp. range for it is about what you really need. I have it hooked up to a thermo. that shuts off at the desired temp.
What you might want to do is case them a.s.a.p. or just start over from the begg. It's up to you!
Depending how long ago you birthed them, it still might be ok.
BTW- the reason for the aborts is most likly due from lack of water in your jars, and/or heat problems.
Good Luck

The dryness of your cakes is what caused your aborts. Shrooms are atleast 90% water and if you don't have much water, you won't get many mature mushrooms. You can try dunking your cakes, or injecting them with sterile water, to salvage them. I say start up a new batch right now, w/out the heating pad, and see what you can do to save these ones until the others are done then just toss these ones out.

Thanks for the input guys, it's about what I expected. I just wanted to make sure that Lipa Yais and Eq's don't have these traits on their own.
IT's time to start another batch, 4 of Eq and 10 of Lipa Yai (all from honey water, which works well in my experience.)
The terrarium has clear sides, which has worked fine before. However, it may be time to get a opaque one and cut a hole in the top.
Thanks guys, I'd like as much input as possible

Oh quick question: Using home made BRF requires a little more water, but few teks tell you exactly how much.
Squeezing a handful of the substrate produces a little water to seep out, is that a good test for suitable water content? The stuff isn't clumpy or mushy, just squeezing produces an effect similar to a sponge :) Is that cool? (Never used BRF/Verm before, just straight rice)
