NE1 els get dry cake tops with mmfilter disks?
    #433245 - 10/22/01 09:44 PM (21 years, 3 months ago)

i have 24 cakes colinizing, 2 lost to green mold contamin, so now im down to 22, i started the first dozen a week or 2 ahead of the other 12, the first 11 (lost 1) are perty much colinized except the tops of the cakes havent colinized. i think that the filter disks dried the tops out a bit. after noticing this i rased the humidity to 80+%. there still is lil or no sign of colinization on top. after about 2 weeks. should i try to fruit them anyway? the second 11 (lost 1) are doing much better after sucsesfully doing the inner res tek. actuly catching up on the amount of cake colinization as the first 11
i am also noticeing blueing of some of the collinized parts of the cake. contamin? looks more like blue stain to me. is that bad?

get humidity even higher should make it collonize faster. but dont get it to moist. WHen i get blue stains on the cake it's generaly because it's to dry. if it's dark blue and dosent look like part of the cake it usualy to wet. if it's to wet it should still collonize fine, wet spot wont though. after birthing cut ALL the wet spot out, dont just scrape it off. Will provide an entry point for cobweb within a day or 2

they look already pery moist inside the jar. the first batch are small and i have tried to turn them up side down filter down. this leaves a space in the top of the jar. in that space i see moisture build up like a drop or 2 if i shake the jar. is that to much moisture? they are equadore and m3 3m thi some shit like that. any advise from here through harvest would be nice. this is my first time.

my first few attempts with filter disks resulted in drying of the tops also. (actually most of the way down the cake with no colonization) i did some more this weekend and innoculated 4 puerto ricans on monday; 2 cubensis from a really cool looking mycellium cloud thingy in my mycellium water and 6 pan cyans on tuesday. about 9am this morning (wednesday) i see small amounts of mycellium on them all. I also used a layer of fairly wet vermiculite on the tops of these substrates to try and combat my drying of substrate. cannot provide feedback after only 48 hours but i can say that i have never seen germination in 48 hours and i am just excited. but aniiways, im sure wet verm on the top will keep moisture where i want it.

HQ says yes, very dry. she cant use just disks anymore with 3 failed batches, her def'n of failed= had to scrape off 20% of uncolonized bone-dry substrate in pf/alientek/shakable rye jars (even when kept in moist 85 degree temps at 96-99% rh). colonization was just okay taking into account the slowing/stopping of growth at the tops of jars (3 seperate strains, 3 seperate substrates). no contams, but she hasnt had any contams in jars mm or no since upgrading to a pc and doing all innoculations in a sterile glovebox. having to use holes punched in lids, under the disks now- kinda a bummer. cest la vie; likely she will not use them in pf tek/alientek style jars anymore since the punching holes in lids wouldnt help too much in her opinion... only wll be using them for shakable quarts now, and those with punched lids underneath the disks. (keeping them in a humidified chamber is too much work for too little result, so far.) shes got a big bag of polyfil still... perhaps a return to the old school may be in order.

gluck

nsp- yeah, HQ had dry verm on top of the pf and alientek jars. *never leave home without it* (though she did debate it with her jackal- who won out and insisted we use it despite the disks). she wont consider using wet verm on top (suggested above) as it may contam (thru itself holding water, wicking excess water to the substrate, and thru its contact with the disk- as the disk cant be wet, etc etc). alientek's jars literally had dry whole rice on top of them... note though, since it was *so* dry- HQ imagines no contams could have settled in on uncolonized substrate b/c it just like regular dry rice and had no qualms scraping it off (well, but that she lost potential uncolonized substrate).

also- wide mouth 1/2 pints seem to be more affected than tall 1/2 pints... the surface area is larger and lets in more air of course, but it seems the amt of substrate lost was greater (more than the proportion of surface area) would seem should be. strange observation to thnk about if you fitz w/ the pf ratios, try it out in different jars as well. HQ really thinks the size made a huge (bad) difference... and shes usu. a big fan of the short and cute (wide mouths).
