Going to give Hip Hop a try, any suggestions?
    #4621113 - 09/04/05 10:51 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

I've never really given Hip Hop a second listen.

I just kind of dismissed it and stuck to classic rock and shit. But now I want to hear the best of what Hip Hop has to offer. I want to try and get into it, because if it's this big and popular, something really good must've held it up.

Where should I start looking? Not like the roots, but ya really good artists. Good heavy beats.

cLOUDDEAD and other anticon stuff rocks big time.

You might also want to try many of Ninjatune releases. They have a lot of quality hiphop.

So many choices, it's difficult to make a short list. I'd say grab some Atmosphere, Non-Phixion, Blackalicious, Binary Star, CunninLynguists, Bahamadia, Big L, Gangstarr, Freestyle Fellowship, Illogic, Immortal Technique, Jedi Mind Tricks, Looptroop, MF Doom, The Last Emperor, The Roots, Ultramagnetic MC's, Erik B. & Rakim, some Wu (Tical, Liquid Swords, Ironman). It could go on and on. I'd say check out a few sites with reviews of some of the people listed (amazon is useful for reviews and what not sometimes also).

i'm not really into rap but the following are the best i've heard so far...
i'd say go with the poets!
saul williams (he does his rap/poetry ontop of diffrent styles... even "metal" and the lyrics WILL blow your mind!)

Sage Francis is very similar and the lyrics often don't fall short of saul (though there's no question in my mind that saul is "the better man")

and for something diffrent i'd say get Dizzee Rascal - Boy In Da Corner
VERY simple beats with very complicated rapping and excelent british lyrics

missy E always gets me bobbing around
Ms. Dynamite - A Little Deeper (VERY cute!!!)

enjoy

Artifacts - they are no longer together, but the CD 'That's Them' is a classic hip hop album.
Tame One is slowly climbing after the split of Artifacts.  I still listen to 'Thats Them' quite often.

"Collaboration of mics" is a great track with guests.

What... Nobody gonna mention Pharcyde?

Check out Bizzare ride to the Pharcyde.

Clouddead sounds more triphop to me.. But I only have small audio clips to go off of.. Definetly on my list of things to buy though...

cduniverse is a great place to listen to audio clips of everyone listed here.. Then go out to your local moms and pops shop and have them order your favorites.

Youll thank yourself for it.

Definately give Beastie Boys a listen. They are really the ones that brought me into hip-hop.

Mainstream or not, Outkast is cool. I like their pre-Speakerboxx/love below stuff better. To me it delivered, now they have fallen into the helpless pit of the pop scene. Even still, in my opinion outkast is ahead of their game. Don't get me wrong, Speakerboxx/The love below was good, but it took alot longer to digest as compared to their previous stuff.
