HELP!! Growing Outdoors - Shallow or deep?
    #460309 - 11/16/01 09:53 AM (22 years, 4 months ago)

Quick question -
I am making a last-ditch effort to save my colonized DB compost. I crumbled up the compost and put it outside in my garden in a hole I dug for it... Then I cased the top with straight vermiculite and water..
Here's my question: I spread the colonized compost over a rather large area (6 ft. x 3 ft.) in a pretty thin layer (1 inch, maybe).
Should i have reduced the surface area size and increased the depth instead??? I figured since the compost was already colonized - that a thin layer would suffice - - But i really don't know. Any suggestions?? I could still get to the garden this afternoon and lump all the compost togehter to make it deeper....
Any help is always appreciated..
Thanks.

Thanks Puscle...
I was feeling these same things this morning on the way to werk... I think I'm gonna try and heap the compost up into a thicker but smaller pile when I get home tonight...

Any other ideas?
The compost is encased in a ridiculously kick-ass soil mixture. Just about anything grows in this special recipe of mine... heheheh :)

yeah i agree. not just because puscle said so either:). it will have a stronger hold in a larger clump and possibly fruit longer. it should also give larger fruits with thicker substrate.

Humm with on inch you probably are not going to optimal results, but if your soild is real rich then it might not be so bad,
I would have recommended that you lay it on top of or mixed with some compost or some old grass clipping , anything you have laying around..
If you decide to try and lump it back togeter try mixing in a little dung straw or somthing.
