There are many ways to grow outdoors. I've never tried yet, but will this summer.
You can grow easily in a compost pile or on manure. On Ryche Hawks site, there is an excellent "Outdoor Tek". Also, see the post by Lizard King from a few days ago.
Usually, normal jars are crumbled into the compost and covered with a casing layer of soil and or dead leaves to retain moisture.
