It would be nice to have one around but, they are not really needed unless you are doing some exact
research.

here's some info you might find helpful from http://www.shroomery.org/findorgrowthem.php?View=docs&doc=107:

A tip on humidity:

If you dont have a humidity gauge... one sure way my friend has found to determine humidity from looking at his guages, is by judgeing the condesation on the walls of your grow chamber. For casings you want around 82%-92% humidity. If you see the walls of your grow chamber just sweating away with condensation... and their dripping constantly.. then you more then likely have 100% humidity, this is fine for cakes.. but not casings. To judge 82%-92% humidity.. you should only see light condensation on the walls.. with the occaisional dripping. This is after some fresh air has pumped into your chamber and you let it sit for an hour or two. Also.. those cheap plastic gauges you buy from pet stores.. they dont work. Even most of the ones sold by cigar stores are made by plastic companies. For a good analog meter.. cigar stores carry one made by Cigar Perfect for $12. This model is made by an instamental company, and not a plactic company and works well.

if you're growing cakes, there's def. no need for one. there's no science in keeping 99% humidity. just make sure your walls are sweating. if you're working with casings, a gauge is nice cause it's sometimes hard to tell by looking at condensation what exactly is 90%. Though my gauge broke in the middle of my last run with a casing, and it grew out all right. not huge yields, though, so i think a gauge would be a good idea.

just my .02$ of course...

Just a tip for using Rh gauges for cigars. I worked at a tobacconist for years, and can tell you that calibrating some of the cheaper models is essential. Take a soaked paper towel or three, and wrap the gauge in it. Let that sit for a few minutes. After a while, you can slowly remove the wet paper towels and hand-tune the needle to 100%. Models vary; so will the calibration method.

Not really, but is nice to have one around. Go to the yahoo store and search for hygrometer, they range in price from US$ 4 to US$ 100 bucks... A cheap one will do.
