is there a good method to cold shock cakes after they've been birthed? SWIM's cakes have been chilling out in a fruiting chamber for six days without any signs of primordia.
gracias

well...cold shocking cubensis will SLOW your growth/pinning by a few days. I really don't know why people keep doing this.
hehe I'll say it again:
Cold shocking is mainly used for gourmet mushrooms and for stopping vegitative growth of casings. It is NOT benificial in anyway to PF cakes (unless of course you have to leave for a few days and want to slow pinning:)
This has been a very big misconception since people heard of doing it for gourmet, they think it is the same for cubies.
Most cubies grow in tropical/subtropical climates....the temps there never reach 50F like a fridge does. That is the whole point of making terrariums etc...is to replicate it's natural growing environment.....if it's natural environment doesn't hit 50F you should allow them to do it either.
Dunk at room temp for 12-24 hours.
You probably don't see any growth yet because of the cold shock.
I know there are people here that say cold shocking cubes helps, but that is bullshit.
I have grown 20 cakes, side by side. 10 of wich were cold shocked and 10 that were dunked at 70F(room temp). the 10 cakes that were dunked at room temp not only pinned 3 days earlier, they also had a much better flush.....So if anyone tells you cold shocking is benificial to cubies....ask them if they have tried to do it both ways at the same time.
Cold shocking will only slow you down for about 3-4 days, so that is probably what you are seeing. I wouldn't worry about it too much...it won't hurt you that bad....give it some more time. Pinning can take up to 14 days or more sometimes(all depends on conditions). Just be patient, and GL to ya!
