Re: Could someone explain "COLD SHOCK".........

I have been successfully growing shrooms with the PF Tek. Then I advanced to casing (I hope I'm using the right terms). I have never cold shocked anything before. Now without getting too technical on me, cause there's alot of real technical people out there, what is the purpose of cold shocking and when should it be done?

The purpose of cold shocking I guess is to give mycelium (the snowy white stuff on your cakes or whatever) a jump start if it has "stalled" (stoped colonizing the cake) or for verious reasons

Some say, it is good to "cold-shock" your casing, after it is prepared and ready for the recovery stage.

For example. I will hopefully soon ready to try my first casing. After I complete casing my colonized subsrate, I am going to put the lid on my casing tray (makes the tote basically air tight) cover it in black tape or something so no light gets in, and then im going to stick it in my fridge for 24 hours. After 24 hours I am going to take it out of the fridge and put it in my growing chamber. Some recooment letting it 'recover' before putting it in the fruiting chamber, but screw that! I don't care where it is recovering.

So yeah to cold-shock, is just what the term says. Your shocking the mycelium in hopes to get it to grow/live whatever. I killed some cakes by burning them todeath, i cold shocked, and they came back to life, rather weird.

COLD SHOCK TEK FOR NOOB

1.Put in fridge for 24 hours
2.take out of fridge, bring temp up to nominal

If you don't understand WTF i am saying.. .pm me..

BTW what species you going to case?

Cold Shocking is in theory a way to iniate pinning.

Yea. I think its got something to do with genetics, a signal to start forming fruit bodies. Kind of like how switching lights to 12/12 causes marijuana plants to start flowering.

Truthfully I have no idea what species I am growing cause I never labled my prints. I was just so friggen happy that I successfully made prints and syringes that I forgot to label them. When the jars DIDN'T get contaminated, well I thought I was gonna faint (it qwas my 2nd time making syringes and I never thought I would be successful). But they gotta be good. Am I suppposed to cold shock between flushes?

I wouldn't think that would be necessary.

Is there a way to cold shock after it is prepared and ready for the recovery stage without putting it into the fridge? Maybe with ice or something? And by recovery stage, do you mean between flushes? I don't think it will fit my fridge.

I've heard of people putting ice paks in their terrariums to lower the temperature. That might work.

Thanks. I'll give it a try. This is my second time using a casing layer. The first time I only got 2 flushes and it got green mold. I gave up on rice cakes and hope this turns out to be more fruitful.

I've been hearing this for a long time. Many say you don't have to cold shock. Well I took 40 cakes and shocked 20 of them and just did a plain dunk with the others. Every single one of the cold shocked cakes fruited 1.5 to 2 days before all but 3 of the unshocked ones.

i got just the opposite result on my first batch of cakes,,,the coldshocked ones took longer to pin than plain dunked.
and since i switched to just casings i haven't coldshocked at all...
but i suppose if i experimented enough i'm sure i'd get results proving just the opposite....i think it's really a moot point, cubes will fruit with or without a coldshock.

Some strains are receptive to cold shocking, others are not. As the wise sage Marijuana Man would say on indoor cultivation, "Create the environment, nothing more." Cold shocking is simply an environmental factor. Like mother nature saying "Okay everybody, do what your going to do cause it's going to get shit ass cold real soon." Amazonians might not be as responsive to cold shock because they are a tropical shroom, but liberty caps from Washington state would definitely benifit. It gets really cold there. Conversely, I've had casings pin on their own. You are not controlling these mushrooms, simply providing an artificial environment. Cold shocking and dunking are meant to reproduce cold and wet conditions.

Cold shocking may not be required, but it never hurts to try it.. My friend just puts his in the fridge for 24 hrs.

The purpose of cold shocking is actually to SLOW the growth of mycelium to initiate pinning. You see, a casing won't pin until it "knows" that it has colonized all of it's substrate. Then it stops growing and goes into the fruiting stage. The idea behind cold shocking is to give it an early signal to pin by stalling the growth of the mycelium. It is NOT intended to jump start mycelium that isn't colonizing properly, it is actually just the opposite. IMOA it is rarely necessary though.

dunking rehydrates the cakes, cold shocking stops the growth of mycelium and initiates pinning
