Proper Cold Shocking Technique
    #924355 - 10/02/02 07:46 AM (16 years, 22 days ago)

I've searched and found nothing detailing the exact methods of cold shocking so I figured I'd ask here.

I've got 2 cakes which aren't pinning sitting in my terrarium. How do I need to prepare the cakes before I put them into the refrigerator for cold shocking? I imagine they need to be covered up in some manner, but how? It seems somewhat dangerous to place an open cake in such an environment....

Any info is greatly appreciated.

Vipe

There is no technique to it, you just put the mycelium in the fridge! Just do whatever you think is right as for keeping the cakes safe. The fridge has alot of contams in it mind you so be carefull....

I put my casing into a rubbermain contained and wrapped that with saran wrap.

Thanks for such a quick response.

How dangerous do you think cold shocking is? Is it worth the added risk of contams (in your opinion)?

Have you ever lost a cake due to contams from the fridge?

Thanks yet again!

People are shitscared of their fridges, but I don't buy it.
Why would there be a lot of germs in a fridge? They dont exactly multiply fast at 4 degrees. IMHO cold shocking is not risky at all.

I put my jars ( before the cakes are removed ) into the fridge overnight. That way contam issues are nil. I have noticed very little difference with pinning on P. CUBES. Cold shock is needed with other species though....

I have also tried taking ice cubes and setting them around my cakes to help kick off pinning. How long have you been waiting for them to pin and what kind of cube are they??

If you take the cake and put it back in the same jar it was colonized in and fill it with distilled or spring water, or tap water if yours is good. Put the lid back on and make sure the cake is immersed in the water, then put in the fridge for 12-24 hours at the max.

This should do the trick.

Good luck to you

Hey, speaking of which does anyone know if B+ needs cold shocking?  I heard they don't like it... Just trying to a second opinion here.

I've got a tray full of poo that I just spawned and I'm wondering what I should do with it come time to fruit.
