The Logical Song
    #4542896 - 08/16/05 03:31 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

This song came on in the car and reminded me of S&P.

Lyrics by supertramp.

When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful,
a miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.
And all the birds in the trees, well they'd be singing so happily,
joyfully, playfully watching me.
But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible,
logical, responsible, practical.
And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable,
clinical, intellectual, cynical.

There are times when all the world's asleep,
the questions run too deep
for such a simple man.
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
but please tell me who I am.

Now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical,
liberal, fanatical, criminal.
Won't you sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're
acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegtable!

At night, when all the world's asleep,
the questions run so deep
for such a simple man.
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
but please tell me who I am.

A very appropriate title and unfortunately, an all too common occurrence.

"So really, ordinary reality is a kind of chemical habit, sanctioned by culture, which says it's okay to use certain drugs, eat certain foods, and have certain sexual behaviors. However, when you transcend all this pre-conditioning by returning to the original wisdom of the animal body, then you discover this immense dimension of opportunity. For some people, it is a frightening risk. To me, that's the psychedelic experience."

Are you suggesting that this forum is a fortress of conservatism leaving the embattled liberals to fend for their lives? This place has got to be the biggest collection of eclectic liberals I have ever seen. There is room here for all views...and ALL people should have the freedom to express their views.

i think its more that S&P generally becomes a battleground between "rational" and "spiritual". whether it's perceived or real, i would agree.

Some degree of conflict is necessary to get at the truth. Conflict is what causes change in perceptions and ideals. Conflict breeds new paradigms. That does not mean it should be mean spirited.

Hue relax.

I just said it reminded me of S&P. Trens post about wondering where the wonder went came to mind. Um thats it. I often wonder it myself when I get to serious or caught up in the material and pretentions to act acceptable and presentable in mainstream society. I thought some members would be able to relate to the lyrics.

I think from time to time, we all find ourselves watching our Ps and Qs when maybe, we'd rather be wild and free. If we do it long enough, let society model us after how they expect us to be for us to be accepted and respected we start to forget who we are.

It's a cool song! Remember how popular it was and how much air play it got? Everyone I knew ran out and bought Breakfast in America.

Kake,

That song came out somehwere in the mid 70s. I was channel surfing and hit Benny and the Jets and was like oooooooh there's a fun oldie and The Logic song followed it. It must've been some 70's station.

it seems because most people are stupid that they are frightened by logic so much that they percieve it as something unjoyfull and dark.

If people could think, logic would be percieved as something much more fun

I really like this song. It says a lot to me personally.

I agree Old. Even many proclaiming logic as their God don't have a clue about it. Logic is an integral part of any spiritual path.

I just realized where there may be some confusion about why I posted this. It's not a slam on logic. To the contrary.

To me, this song is about questioning the logic of social conditioning.

Is social conditioning, to make one presentable and acceptable, the logical thing to go along with or does it turn you into a vegetable?

To me, the song is asking you to use logic to question the consequences of social conditioning and what you loose in the process.

Don't forget peeps, that logic is also a philosophical form of reasoning.

The lyrics are about a dude reasoning his way through his social conditioning , whats been lost, and who he is.

You nailed it, jiggy. Social conditioning can be a plague on all of us. It's sad, but brainwashing is a part of life, and I don't profess to be free by any means. I might be resentful, but I'm the first to tell you I'm as brainwashed as the next. And I think the writer of the song would tell you the same.
