I agree to some extent, but not entirely. In India, the caste system is becoming less and less relevant as they modernize, particularly in urban centers. I would agree that the more "backwards" a culture is, the more difficult it will be to modernize, but economic progress generally tends to lead toward social progress.

I think they just need to be shown that there is an alternative, and that they can choose to change their culture.


It's too bad that the alternatives that they are most proactively exposed to are western pop culture. If they're going to imitate us, I wish they would immitate our better natures rather than our soft drink commercials.

As to India's caste system, though it is repressive in a social and economic sense they don't stone people or cut their heads or clits off. Nor is it as pervasive anymore. It is nowhere near what these animals are doing. Let's not get into a moral equivalency trap here.

You seem to have missed my point. I was not trying to be morally relativistic. Rather, I was pointing out that as India has progressed economically, some of its more repressive social traditions such as the caste system have become less pervasive. The point I was trying to make is that as a culture becomes more wealthy, their more archaic traditions become less important in their society, and slowly fade away.
