soft shrooms - safe?
    #4536616 - 08/15/05 03:15 AM (11 years, 3 months ago)

i have some old shrooms which i had been storing in plastic bag inside a glass jar for several months. although they appeared dry and brittle when i first got them and worked fine then, ive noticed that they have become soft and seem to be falling apart while some of them seemed to have become darker in color (changing from whitish to brown). i'm not concerned about potency loss so much as i am concerned about safety. could there be any danger from taking these shrooms? can they "go bad" so to speak?

Do they smell bad?

A bad mushroom is just like eating bad fruit (or any bad food for that matter), which is obviously very bad for you. If they are still very dry, then there is probably no bacterial growth.

If they seem moist and soft they may be rotting, and rotten food isn't good.

If they go bad, they might make you a little sick to your stomach after eating them...but they are probably ok for now. They probably will get wet enough to rot soon though. There will definatly be a loss of potency per weight, since there is now some water weight, if you dry them out the weight should return and potency should be normal, by weight.
